GENEVA, N.Y. – The Lebanon Valley Field Hockey team continued a strong start to the season with a 4-2 victory over St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon at McCooey Field on the campus on William Smith College.
The Dutchmen (4-0) got on the board first late in the 11th minute as
Jenna Angstadt found the back of the cage from the stroke mark off an assist from
Rebecca Lane. Angstadt nearly doubled the lead less than a minute later as her shot attempt was saved by the SLU keeper. The teams battled up-and-down the field for the first 15 minutes with Angstadt recording the only two shots of the quarter.
LVC came out firing in the second quarter with five shots saved in a span of 20 seconds.
Lexi Ward, Angstadt,
Sorrell Long, and
Gracie Johnson all had shots saved during the period as the Dutchmen defense didn't allow a single shot in the first half. LVC held a 10-0 shot advantage at halftime with eight shots coming in the second quarter.
Claire Weidenhammer gave the Dutchmen a 2-0 lead early in the third quarter as she flicked home a cross by Johnson. Less than a minute later
Abby Rodenberger increased the lead as her shot deflected off a defender's stick and into the back of the cage. The fourth goal came in the 39th minute as Ward batted a ball out of the air after
Lauren Foster had her attempt saved. The Saint got on the board in the 41st minute with a goal on a rebounded shot off a penalty corner.
Ward looked like she was about to score her second goal of the game early in the fourth quarter, but her shot was kept out of the cage by a defensive player. The Dutchmen continued pressing the Saints but were unable to score again. St. Lawrence was able to score off a rebound in the 57th minute to set the final.
