Penner Leads Volleyball in Season Opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Mattea Penner had seven kills to lead the Lebanon Valley volleyball team on Friday as the Dutchmen dropped the season opener 3-0 at Haverford College.
 
The host Fords won by scores of 25-21, 25-14, and 25-16. The first set was a back-and-forth affair. Haverford won four consecutive points to take a 10-6 lead before LVC struck right back with three straight points to bring it to a one-point deficit. The Dutchmen used a strong 5-0 run to take a 14-11 lead and force Haverford to call a timeout. The Fords responded by winning nine of the next 10 points to take a 20-15 lead. LVC fought back and brought the set to 23-21 before the Fords won the next two points to take the set.
 
Haverford opened a 7-3 lead in the second set. The Dutchmen were able to cut the lead down to 9-7 but the Fords responded with a 4-0 run. Back-to back kills by Taylor McInerney and Annelese Atkinson cut the advantage down the 14-11 but the Fords used another 5-0 run to take a 19-11 lead before taking the second set 24-14.
 
The teams traded points to start the first set until Haverford scored six consecutive points to take a 7-2 advantage. The teams battled back and forth with the Fords holding a 13-8 lead midway through the set. Haverford then used a 7-0 run to take a 12-point lead. The Dutchmen fought back valiantly winning five consecutive points to bring the deficit to 23-15. The Fords won two of the next three points to close out the match.

  • Penner led the attack with seven kills and added four digs.
  • McInerney played in two sets and had five kills on 13 attacks.
  • Robyn Stepler had 19 assists and nine digs.
  • Abigail Souder led the team in digs with 11.
  • Teaguen Reynolds had three block assists.
  • Margaret Cole had four kills and two service aces.
 
Up Next
LVC will be back at Haverford tomorrow for a pair of neutral site matches. The Dutchmen will take on Wheaton College (Mass.) at 11 a.m. before facing Stockton University at 1:30 p.m.
