Stepler Leads Volleyball to Sweep at Haverford Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Robyn Stepler was named to the All-Tournament Team after leading the Lebanon Valley volleyball team to a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Haverford Invitational. The Dutchmen started the day with a 3-1 victory over Wheaton College (Mass.) and then defeated Stockton University 3-2.
 
Game One vs. Wheaton (Mass.)
The Dutchmen got off to a great start against the Lyons winning the first two sets 25-21 and 25-20. Wheaton used a big rally midway through the third set to extend the match with a 25-22 set win. LVC responded with a big 25-18 win in the fourth set to end the match.
 
The teams battled back and forth at the beginning of the match with the Lyons taking a slight 5-4 lead. LVC tied the set on a service error and then took the lead on an attack error. Taylor McInerney and Maraget Cole added back-to-back kills to put the Dutchmen up 8-5. Wheaton responded with three straight points to tie the set up. The set was still tied at 11-11 when the Dutchmen used a 6-2 run to go up 17-13 and force the Lyons to call a timeout. Wheaton was able to cut the advantage back down to as much as two points at 20-18 but LVC finished the set on a 5-3 run.
 
Teaguen Reynolds began the second set with a kill and the Dutchmen got out to a 4-2 lead after block assists by Reynolds and Libby Lindau. The Lyons countered with a 5-2 run to take a 7-6 lead. Penner and McInerney fueled a 5-0 run that gave LVC a four-point advantage and forced the Lyons to call a timeout. The lead increased to 14-8 and then LVC used another 5-0 run with Abigail Souder serving to take the set from 17-11 to 21-11. Wheaton fought back and was able to get the advantage down to 22-19 forcing LVC to call a timeout. The Dutchmen came out of the time out and scored three of the next foru points to close out the set.
 
The Dutchmen started strong in the third set and got out to an 8-4 advantage. The Lyons kept the score close until a service error and a Lindau kill off an overpass gave the Dutchmen a 16-11 lead. Wheaton rallied to take a 20-18 and were still up by two before an attack error and a Penner kill tied the match at 22. The Lyons called timeout and then scored the next three points to extend the match another set.
 
LVC jumped ahead 5-1 in the fourth set before the Lyons used a big rally to take an 8-6 lead. Penner and Cole had kills to tie the match up before the Dutchmen retook the lead at 11-10. The set was still close at 17-15 when three straight points for the Dutchmen forced the Lyons to call timeout with the match on the line. Wheaton got within 20-17 but Penner, McInerney, and Cole had kills to close out the match.
 
Inside the Box
  • McInerney led the offense with 15 kills on 30 attacks. She also had seven digs and a solo block.
  • Stepler had a big match with 33 assists and 10 digs.
  • Penner had 14 kills and a service ace with four digs.
  • Cole finished with eight kills while Lindau had seven.
  • Reynolds recorded four block assists and three kills.
  • Souder led the team with 17 digs and four service aces.
 
Game Two vs. Stockton
Stockton won the first set 25-11 before LVC took the next two 25-20 and 25-17. The Ospreys came back to win the fourth set 25-17 before the Dutchmen ended the match with a 15-10 fifth set victory,
 
Stockton got out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set. The Osprey increased the advantage to 10-4 before LVC called a timeout. McInerney had a pair of kills for the Dutchmen, but Stockton was able to increase the lead up to 16-6. The advantage grew to 23-9 before kills by Cole and McInerney gave the Dutchmen double-digit points in the set.
 
LVC regrouped and came out strong in set two as a 4-0 run gave them a 7-3 lead and forced Stockton to call a timeout. The Osprey scored the next point out of the break, but LVC responded with the next six points thanks to kills by Penner and Riley Mack along with three straight attack errors for the Osprey. Stockton was able to cut the lead down to 14-10 but once again the dutchmen responded and a service ace by Mack gave LVC an 18-12 lead. LVC maintained the five-to-six-point lead until Stockton used a 4-1 run to make it 23-20. Mack and Reynolds had kills to end the set and tie the match up at one.
 
The beginning of the third set belonged to Stockton as they built a 11-5 advantage. The Dutchmen responded with a 6-1 run that ended with a Reynolds kill to bring the deficit down to one. After a Stockton point the Dutchmen continued their strong play with a 12-1 run to take a 23-14 lead and burned both of Stockton's timeouts in the process. The Osprey were able to cut the advantage down to seven, but a pair of service errors gave the Dutchmen a 2-1 match lead.
 
Stockton won the first eight points of the fourth set to get out to a big lead. LVC fought back and closed the gap to 9-6 and got as close as 11-9 before the Osprey used another big run. Stockton scored seven consecutive points to go up 18-9 and led 21-11 as a fifth set looked almost certain. The Dutchmen didn't let that stop them from closing the gap to 24-17 before Stockton scored the final point of the set.
 
Reynolds started the fifth set with a kill and the teams battled back and forth the first eight points. Cole and Mack had back-to-back kills and then a bad set gave LVC a 7-4 lead and forced the Osprey to call a timeout. Stockton was able to cut the lead to 10-9 before a 4-0 run gave LVC match point at 14-9. The Osprey extended the set with a kill but then a service ace gave the Dutchmen a thrilling victory.
 
Inside the Box
  • Stepler had another great match with 37 assists to give her 89 total assists for the tournament. She also had 11 digs.
  • Cole had nine kills, a solo block, and two block assists for 11 total points.
  • Reynolds finished with seven kills, two aces, and three block assists.
  • Mack had nine kills and a service ace.
  • Lindau finished with eight kills and seven digs.
  • Souder led the team in digs with 15.
  • Penner added six kills and 10 digs.

The Dutchmen will be in action on Wednesday evening with a short trip to Elizabethtown College to face the Blue Jays at 7 p.m. inside Thompson Gymnasium.
