Weidenhammer Scores Twice in Season-Opening Win

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Claire Weidenhammer had two goals and the Lebanon Valley field hockey team shut out visiting Elizabethtown College to earn a 4-0 season-opening victory on Friday evening at Arnold Field.

The Dutchmen put early pressure on the Blue Jays earning a penalty corner a couple minutes into the game. Gracie Johnson sent the corner out to Sorrell Long who blasted a shot from the top of the circle that was kept out of the back of the cage. The Dutchmen were able to earn a penalty stroke off the attempt and Long calmly stepped up and converted the stroke to give LVC a 1-0 lead 3:05 into the contest.

Jenna Angstadt and Long had a pair of shots saved a minute later as the Dutchmen looked to increase their lead. Weidenhammer nearly scored in the 12th minute as her shot went off the post and back into play. The Dutchmen finished the first quarter strong and out shot the Blue Jays 9-0 during the first 15 minutes of play.

Elizabethtown took their first shot early in the second quarter off a penalty corner attempt as Ella Weidenhammer knocked it away for a save. A couple minutes later Lexi Ward drove the ball down the right side and sent a cross into the circle where Claire Weidenhammer was able to blast a shot into the back of the cage for her first goal of the year. The teams battled up and down the field the rest of the half with the Dutchmen taking a 2-0 lead into the break.

The teams continued the close play into the third quarter with the Blue Jays recording a 5-4 shot advantage. Weidenhammer was called upon to make a quartet of saves within 20 seconds early in the period including a fantastic stretch where she made back-to-back-to back saves. The Dutchmen were able to earn seven penalty corners in the quarter but were not able to score.

LVC added two more penalty corners in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter and scored on the second attempt as Angstadt scored her first goal of the season. The Dutchmen kept the pressure on the Blue Jays and allowed just one shot in the first 10 minutes of the quarter. Weidenhammer gave the Dutchmen a 4-0 lead as she scored her second goal of the game in the 56th minute.
