10-Run First Inning Fuels Dutchmen Baseball’s Victory Over Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, Pa. ­­ Kenny Palmieri and Tyler Satterfield both launched their first career home runs for the Lebanon Valley College baseball team, helping lead the club to a 20-6 victory over Lancaster Bible College on Tuesday, April 23 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
 
The Chargers (18-13-1, 7-7-1 United East) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to left field. The Dutchmen (18-16, 10-8 MAC Freedom) promptly answered with a big 10-run frame in the bottom of the first, taking a 10-1 lead. Luke Pollock led off the frame with a single to left-center field and advanced to second on a fielding error, before Nico Santoro bright him home with an RBI double down the right-field line. The club proceeded to load the bases with no outs after Logan Brewer hit a single to center field and Shane Stossel was hit by a pitch. Satterfield then launched a grand slam over the right-center field wall, scoring Santoro, Brewer, and Stossel to give LVC a 5-1 advantage. 

Lebanon Valley continued to put runs on the board as the bottom of the first progressed, as Duncan Weir later hit an RBI single through the right side to drive in Palmieri. Pollock followed this by lining an RBI single into left-center field, plating Weir. Santoro then hit his second RBI double of the inning, sending this ball down the left-field line to score Pollock. Brewer capped off the first by crushing a two-run blast over the right-center field fence, knocking in Santoro to make it a 10-1 ballgame. 

Tony Bennage started on the mound for the Flying Dutchmen and pitched a scoreless top of the second inning, striking out a batter in the process. Lebanon Valley's lineup kept its productive night going in the bottom of the second, adding a run to go ahead 11-1. Palmieri sent a high-fly ball to right field that landed on the tent above the seats for a solo homer. Bennage then retired the side in order in the top of the third, registering a pair of groundouts before Santoro ran from shortstop out to shallow center field to make the catch on a fly ball.

The Dutchmen tacked on another in the bottom of the third, taking a 12-1 lead. Palmieri picked up his second hit of the contest with an RBI single through the left side, bringing home Santoro. Bennage posted two more zeros in the top of the fourth and fifth innings, maintaining LVC's 11-run lead. Lebanon Valley plated two more in the bottom of the fifth inning, going up 14-1. Justin Ranker hit an RBI single that dropped into right field, scoring Stossel. Weir then lined another RBI single into right field, driving in Palmieri. 

Lancaster Bible countered with a run in the top of the sixth, narrowing the score to 14-2. Lebanon Valley continued to put runs on the scoreboard as the game went into the bottom of the sixth inning, claiming a 17-2 lead. Logan Fuga got the frame started with a pinch-hit single before Christian Vanelli sent a pinch-hit double into left-center field, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Devin Kreger then drove a two-run double off the right-center field fence, plating Fuga and Vanelli. Later in the inning, Palmieri continued his big game by lining an RBI single to right, knocking in Kreger. 

Hayden Fravel entered the game to pitch for the Flying Dutchmen in the top of the seventh and started his appearance with a 1-2-3 inning. The southpaw registered an unassisted groundout to first base, a strikeout looking, and a groundout to shortstop. The Chargers then scored four runs in the top of the eighth, advancing the score to 17-6 after a frame that included a two-run single through the left side. 

The Dutchmen added some insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, going ahead 20-6. Parker Tarnoci led off with a double to right-center field before Tyler Marley brought him home with an RBI double to right-center. Later in the frame, Kameron Wetzel hit a ground ball to shortstop and reached on a throwing error, allowing Marley and Adam Jirik to score. Kyle McCracken entered the game to pitch for LVC in the top of the ninth inning and secured the victory with a shutout frame, picking up two strikeouts. 

Inside the Box Score
  • The Dutchmen scored a season-high 20 runs with a season-most 25 hits.
  • Lebanon Valley scored 10 runs on eight hits in the bottom of the first inning. Pollock, Santoro, and Brewer each had two hits in the opening frame. 
  • Satterfield's grand slam in the first inning marked his first career home run. The sophomore also had a game-high and career-high four RBIs. 
  • Palmieri's long ball in the top of the second inning was his first career home run as well. The sophomore also tied game-highs and career-highs with four hits and three runs scored. Additionally, Palmieri tied a career-high three RBIs while stealing his third base of the spring.
  • Weir had a career-high four hits with his first double of the spring, tying the game-high in hits. The junior also registered a season-high two RBIs while crossing the plate once and stealing his fourth base of the year. 
  • Brewer hit his eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the first. The junior also tallied a walk, two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
  • Santoro recorded two RBI doubles, tying his career-high for doubles while matching a career-most three runs scored. 
  • Pollock tied a season-high two hits while driving in a run and crossing the dish twice. The left fielder also had a career-high three putouts. 
  • Stossel logged two hits, a walk, and two runs scored. 
  • Kreger recorded the first two RBIs of his career with a double. The first-year also scored a run. 
  • Vanelli picked up his first career hit with a double in the bottom of the sixth and scored his first career run.
  • Tarnoci doubled in the bottom of the eighth for his first career hit before scoring a run. 
  • Marley logged his first career knock and RBI with an RBI double in the eighth. The first-year also scored his first career run. 
  • Fuga tallied his first two base hits of the season while scoring a run. 
  • Ranker registered a base hit and an RBI. 
  • Adam Jirik drew his first career walk and scored his first run. The first-year tallied a base hit as well. 
  • Bennage recorded two strikeouts in his start on the mound, picking up his first win of the year. 
  • Michael Williams registered his first strikeout of the season during an inning of relief.
  • Fravel fanned a batter in his appearance out of the bullpen. 
  • McCracken tallied two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning.

Lebanon Valley will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 26, as the club will host Arcadia University at McGill Field to open the final series of the regular season.
