ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College baseball team received contributions from several seniors in its Senior Day doubleheader, helping lead the club to a pair of victories against Delaware Valley University on Saturday, April 20 at McGill Field. The Dutchmen took the first game by a score of 14-4 after three RBIs by
Ethan O'Loughlin and won the second 10-4 with a three-hit effort by
Shane Stossel and eight strikeouts by
Blair Shaffer.
Lebanon Valley honored its eight seniors in a pregame ceremony, recognizing O'Loughlin, Stossel, Shaffer,
Ryan Murphy,
Michael Williams,
Ryan Pickle,
Ryan Petrucci, and
Jared Copeland.
Game One
The Aggies (12-18, 3-12 MAC Freedom) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead on an RBI single to right-center field and a two-run home run to left field. Delaware Valley had runners on first and second base with two outs in the top of the second, creating a chance to score when their right fielder sent a single into left field. But the Dutchmen (16-15, 9-8 MAC Freedom) got out of the frame when left fielder
Luke Pollock threw home to catcher
Jace Fetterman, who applied the tag for the third out. LVC starting pitcher
Jacob Horton then retired the side in order in the top of the third, registering a line out to center, a fly out to the left fielder, and a strikeout.
Lebanon Valley's bats followed this by posting a big 10-run frame in the bottom of the third inning, taking a 10-3 advantage. Stossel got things started with an RBI single to first base, scoring
Nico Santoro. O'Loughlin then lined an RBI single to left field, plating
Logan Brewer. The club tied the game when
Owen Berry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home Stossel. Murphy put the team ahead with a two-run single into left-center field, scoring Fetterman and O'Loughlin. Later in the inning, Santoro walked with the bases full to score Berry. Brewer followed this by hitting a ball to third base that was thrown home but went past Delaware Valley's catcher, allowing Murphy to cross the plate. Stossel then sent a fly ball into left field that was dropped, plating
Pete Botbyl. The third was capped off by O'Loughlin lining a two-run single to left field, driving in Santoro and Brewer.
Horton then delivered another 1-2-3 inning for the Dutchmen in the top of the fourth, recording a groundout to third base, a lineout to center field, and a strikeout. The Aggies added a run in the top of the fifth, but the Flying Dutchmen answered back with four in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 14-4. Santoro led off the frame with a double to right-center field before Brewer launched a two-run home run over the right-field wall. This was followed by Stossel driving a triple to right-center field before Fetterman crushed a two-run blast over the right-center field fence.
Williams entered the game to pitch for Lebanon Valley in the top of the sixth inning and began his outing by retiring the side in order with two flyouts and a groundout to shortstop. The senior delivered another scoreless inning in the top of the seventh, securing the win with a pop out to second base.
Inside the Box Score
- Brewer hit his seventh home run of the season and doubled, as he tied a season-high three hits. The junior also walked and tied a game-high three runs scored.
- Fetterman left the yard for the fifth time this spring. The junior also tallied a walk, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
- O'Loughlin had three RBIs, marking a game-high and tying a season-high. The senior logged two hits, a run scored, and a stolen base as well.
- Santoro tied a career-high and game-high three runs scored. The graduate student also had two hits with a double, a walk, and an RBI.
- Stossel tied a season-high three hits while hitting his second career triple. The senior also registered an RBI and crossed the plate twice.
- Murphy tallied a hit, two RBIs, and a run scored. The center fielder also tied a season-high five putouts.
- Berry walked, drove in a run, and scored once.
- Botbyl scored his 50th career run.
- Horton picked up his second win of the season, striking out three batters in a five-inning start.
- Williams tossed two shutout frames in relief.
Game Two
Shaffer started on the mound for the Dutchmen and began the contest by striking out the side in order in the top of the first inning. Delaware Valley (12-19, 3-13 MAC Freedom) got on the scoreboard in the top of the second, taking a 2-0 advantage after an RBI triple to right-center field and an RBI double down the right-field line. Lebanon Valley responded with a run in the bottom of the second inning, narrowing the score to 2-1. Fetterman got the club's offense going in game two by driving a solo home run over the center field wall to lead off the frame.
Shaffer tossed another shutout frame for LVC in the top of the third, striking out the first batter before fielding a grounder and throwing to second to start an inning-ending double play. The Dutchmen then put up four runs in the bottom of the third, taking a 5-2 lead. Santoro evened the score by sending an RBI double down the left-field line, plating
Justin Ranker. This was followed by Brewer lining a two-run single to right field, bringing home Botbyl and Santoro. Fetterman capped off the scoring with an RBI single to center field, knocking in Brewer.
The Aggies added a run in the top of the fifth inning, trimming their deficit to 5-3 on an RBI single to center field.
Kyle McCracken entered the game to pitch for Lebanon Valley in the top of the sixth and started his appearance with a shutout frame, registering a fly out to right field, a pop out to shortstop, and a groundout to short. The Dutchmen tacked on a couple of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, going up 7-3. Santoro and Brewer began the frame with back-to-back singles before Stossel hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Santoro. Later in the inning, Pollock drove in Stossel with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Delaware Valley countered with a run in the top of the eighth inning, making it a 7-4 game on an RBI single to second base. Lebanon Valley answered back in the bottom half of the eighth, extending their lead to 10-4. Ranker and
Duncan Weir began the inning with singles, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Santoro then attempted a sacrifice bunt that went toward third base, but the throw went by the first baseman and into foul territory down the right-field line. This throwing error plated both Ranker and Weir while Santoro hustled around the bases to score as well.
Ryan Pickle came in to pitch for the Dutchmen in the top of the ninth inning and tossed a scoreless frame for the club. The senior recorded the third out of the ninth with a strikeout swinging, securing LVC's second victory of the day.
Inside the Box Score
- Fetterman hit his sixth homer of the season and had two hits in the ballgame. The junior also recorded two walks, two RBIs, and a run scored.
- Santoro tied a season-high three hits while picking up a double and tying a career-high three runs scored. The shortstop drove in a run during the contest.
- Brewer tied a season-high three hits again while hitting a double. The senior picked up two RBIs and a run scored as well.
- Stossel also tied a season-high three hits again while picking up a double. The senior knocked in a run and scored once as well.
- Ranker had a hit and a walk while tying a season-high two runs scored.
- Pollock registered a hit and an RBI.
- Weir picked up a hit and scored a run.
- Botbyl crossed the plate once.
- McCracken improved his record to 2-1, pitching two scoreless innings of relief.
- Shaffer struck out a career-high eight batters in his start on the mound, marking the most strikeouts by an LVC pitcher this year.
- Tony Bennage, Malachi Duka, and Pickle each had a strikeout in appearances out of the bullpen.
