FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Ryan Petrucci had a career-high four hits to lead the Lebanon Valley baseball team to a 9-3 victory over Ursinus College on Thursday at the Lawnwood Complex in Fort Pierce, Florida.
LVC (5-3) had a pair of big innings at the plate in the fourth and sixth to build an 8-1 lead over the Bears (3-5). The Dutchmen pitching took care of the rest with three pitchers combining for seven strikeouts and allowing just seven hits with three walks.
Nico Santoro had the first hit of the game with a double down the line in right in the top of the first inning.
Logan Brewer was hit by a pitch and then Petrucci drew a two out walk to load the bases. The Bears managed to get out of the inning with a ground ball to the shortstop. Neither team was able to put up much offense over the next two innings as the game entered the fourth still scoreless.
Petrucci led off the inning with double to the gap in left center.
Ryan Murphy singled through the right side to put runners on the corners with one out. After a strikeout,
Tyler Satterfield delivered a big two-out single through the left side to score Petrucci with the first run of the game. Murphy stole third and then scored on a
Pete Botbyl single to right. Santoro gave the Dutchmen a 4-0 lead with his second double of the game, this time to left field.
The Dutchmen loaded the bases with one out in the fifth on a
Shane Stossel walk, Petruccci single, and Murphy hit-by-pitch. Ursinus was able to get out of the inning without a run across with a pop up to second and grounder to first. In the bottom of the inning, the Bears had back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases with no outs. They scored a run on a sacrifice fly to left before
Blair Shaffer got out of the inning with a 4-6-3 double play.
LVC responded in the top of the sixth with another big four-run inning.
Ethan O'Loughlin doubled to right center with one out and then Brewer knocked him in with a single to right.
Duncan Weir was hit by a pitch to put two on for Petrucci. The senior doubled down the line in left to plate Brewer.
Justin Ranker knocked in Weir with a ground out to third and then Murphy had an infield single to the shortstop to score Petrucci with LVC's eighth run.
The Dutchmen added to the lead in the seventh as Petrucci put Weir in scoring position with his fourth hit of the game and then Ranker had a single through the left side to knock in a run with two outs. The Bears were able to get a run back in the bottom of the inning on two hits and two walks. Ursinus had the bases loaded with two outs when LVC made a call to the bullpen bringing in
Chris Langsdorf. He got the Dutchmen out of the inning with a fly ball to right. The Bears were able to tack on another run in the ninth on a hit-by-pitch, a single, and a fielder's choice to third. Langsdorf got the final two outs on strikeouts looking to end the game.
Inside the Box
- Petrucci had two doubles, scored twice, and knocked in a run. The senior was a perfect 4-4 with a walk in his five plate appearance.
- The second spot in the order had three of the Dutchmen's season-high six doubles in the game as Santoro hit two before being relieved by O'Loughlin who had one. Eric Sees had the team's sixth double.
- Murphy had another big day with two hits, a stolen base, a run scored, and a run batted in.
- Shaffer earned the win on the mound with four strikeouts in five innings. He allowed just one run on four hits and a walk.
- Tony Bennage pitched 1.2 innings of relief and allowed one run on two hits, two walks, and a strikeout.
- Langsdorf struck out two in the final 2.1 innings of relief.
- The Dutchmen had 15 hits, four walks, and five hit-by-pitches in the game. Brewer got on base four times with a hit, a walk, and two hit-by-pitches.
- LVC turned three double plays in the game.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will be off on Friday before starting conference play on Saturday with a big doubleheader against Stevens Institute of Technology. Game one of the doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m. at the Lawnwood Complex in Fort Pierce. The teams will play a seven-inning game and a nine-inning game.
