FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Lebanon Valley baseball team ended the week in Florida with a doubleheader sweep over Stevens Institute of Technology in the first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom games of the season. LVC hit three home runs to win the opener 4-2 and then scored 10 times in the first two innings of a 17-10 victory in the nightcap.
Game One
The Dutchmen (6-3, 1-0 MAC Freedom) put two runners on in the top of the first as
Ryan Petrucci was hit by a pitch and then
Logan Brewer singled to right. The Ducks (6-2, 0-1 MAC Freedom) were able to get two ground balls to second base to get out of the inning unscathed. Stevens started the bottom of the inning with a single and walk. A fielder's choice put runners at the corners with one out before a stolen base put two runners in scoring position.
Jacob Horton got out of the jam with a strikeout and line out to third.
Ethan O'Loughlin led off the second with a double to left. Two batters later
Owen Berry gave the Dutchmen a 2-0 lead with his first career home run to left field. Stevens put two on in the bottom of the inning with a pair of two-out singles, but Horton got a strikeout to get out of the inning. The score was still 2-0 in the fourth when Berry led off and blasted another home run to left field.
Neither team was able to muster up a lot of offense over the next few innings until Brewer led off the seventh with a homer to right.
Jace Fetterman and O'Loughlin had singles to put runners on the corners with one out, but a double play got the Ducks out of the inning. In the bottom half,
Jacob Detwiler came on in relief to close things down and after getting the first out, an error and walk put runners on first and second. The runners were moved up with a ground out to third and then Stevens plated the two runs with a two-out single to center. Detwiler ended the game with a strikeout to give the Dutchmen the first win in a new conference.
Inside the Box
- Berry hit two home runs and knocked in three runs. The sophomore also made five putout and had three assists in the field at shortstop.
- Brewer had two hits including his ninth career home run and first of the season.
- O'Loughlin had three hits including a double. It is his third multi-hit game of the year.
- Horton had another great pitching performance to pick up his first win of the season. He struck out three and allowed just five hits and three walks over five innings of work.
- Ryan Pickle threw a scoreless sixth inning and struck out one.
- Pete Botbyl walked three times and had a hit in four plate appearance.
Game Two
LVC (7-3, 2-0 MAC Freedom) jumped on top right away scoring eight runs and batting around in the top of the first. Botbyl and Petrucci walked before Brewer drove home a run with a double down the line in right. Fetterman hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Petrucci and then O'Loughlin doubled to plate the third run.
Ryan Murphy kept the rally going with a single to center to make it 4-0.
Justin Ranker was hit by a pitch and then
Eric Sees knocked in Murphy with a single to the gap in left center. Berry knocked the Ducks' starter out of the game with a single to left to score Ranker and make it 6-0. After the call to the pen, the Dutchmen scored a pair on unearned runs on a fielding error and a wild pitch.
Nathan Clarke put the first two batters of the bottom of the first inning on before getting out of the jam with a line out, grounder back to him, and then a strikeout. LVC added on two more runs in the second without getting a hit. Fetterman and O'Loughlin walked to begin the inning. After a wild pitch Murphy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Fetterman scored on a wild pitch and then Murphy scored on another wild pitch. The Ducks got on the board with a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 10-1.
Devin Kreger had a pinch-hit single in the third and then scored two batters later on an O'Loughlin double to left center. Fetterman scored on a wild pitch and then O'Loughlin made it 13-1 as he raced home on a ground out to short. Stevens responded with their biggest inning of the day in the bottom half. The Ducks sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs on five hits and a walk to cut the deficit down to 13-7.
Kenny Palmieri led off the fourth with a pinch-hit double to left field. Berry singled to right and then Palmieri scored on a throwing error by the catcher. The scored remained 14-7 until the fifth when the Ducks got a run across on a double and two singles. Stevens added another run in the sixth to make it a five-run game, but the Dutchmen responded with two runs in the seventh to push the lead back to seven. Kreger led off with a single to center and then moved to third on a Fetterman double to right. One run scored on a wild pitch and then Ranked hit a sacrifice fly to knocked in Fetterman.
Stevens scored their final run of the game in the seventh while LVC scored in the eighth. Berry led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved up to third on a throwing error by the catcher, and then scored on a Botbyl sacrifice fly to left.
Inside the Box
- Berry had another huge game at the plate with three hits, two runs scored, and a run batted in.
- O'Loughlin was 2-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, two runs batted in, and two walks.
- Murphy knocked in two runs and scored twice with two hits.
- Fetterman walked three times and scored three runs. He had a double and knocked in a run.
- The Dutchmen drew a season-high 11 walks and scored 17 runs on 13 hits including five doubles.
- Kyle McCracken got the win on the mound with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out three and allowed just three hits.
- Trey Dianna struck out three in two innings while Clarke and Hunter Williams struck out two each.

The Dutchmen will return to Annville for the home opener on Tuesday. LVC will take on Elizabethtown in a rematch of last year's NCAA Regional elimination game won by the Dutchmen in North Carolina.
