Santoro’s Milestone Day Highlights Win Over Kenyon

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Nico Santoro hit two career milestones as the Lebanon Valley baseball team exploded for 16 hits in an 18-10 victory over Kenyon College on Wednesday at the Lawnwood Complex in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Santoro became the program's leader in career runs scored and then became just the second Dutchman to have 100 career runs batted in.

The Dutchmen (4-3) got out to a 2-0 lead over the Owls (4-2) with a hot start in the first inning. After Andrew Spaan got out of a first and third jam with a pair of strikeouts, Pete Botbyl led off the inning reaching first after a dropped third strike. Santoro singled to left field and then two batters later Shane Stossel was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jace Fetterman drove home Botbyl and Santoro with a single through the right side. The run was Santoro's 115th in his career giving him sole possession of the top spot in the record books.

Kenyon was able to get out of the inning with no more runs scored. The Owls tied the game up in the third as they put runners on second and third with one out. A single up the middle plated the two runs before Spaan got a strikeout and grounder to shortstop to get out of the inning. The Dutchmen struck right back in the bottom half of the inning with three runs on three hits. Santoro led off with a single to left and then stole second. He scored on a Logan Brewer single to center which forced a call to the bullpen for the Owls. Stossel walked and then Jace Fetterman knocked in a run with a single to right which advanced Stossel to third. Ethan O'Loughlin knocked in Stossel with a sacrifice fly to right center for the first out of the inning.

The Owls got a run back in the fourth on a triple and sacrifice fly down the left field line that Santoro was able to grab in foul territory after a long run. LVC broke the game open in the bottom half with four runs to take a 9-3 advantage. Ryan Murphy led off with a single to center and then stole second. Botbyl reached as the Owls tried to throw Murphy out at third but were unsuccessful. The leadoff hitter stole second before advancing to third on a Santoro sacrifice fly to center to score Murphy. The RBI was the 100th of Santoro's career. After another pitching change, Brewer knocked in Botbyl with a single up the middle and then Stossel doubled to left center for another run. Two batters later, O'Loughlin knocked in the final run of the inning with a single to right field.

Kenyon added a run in the fifth but once again the Dutchmen responded with another big inning. Duncan Weir was hit by a pitch and then stole second. Justin Ranker walked and then Murphy drove in two runs with a double to the gap in left center. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and after a Botbyl walk and steal of second, Murphy scored on a wild pitch. Stossel drew a two-out walk and then Fetterman drove in the final two runs of the inning with a triple to right center giving LVC a 14-4 advantage.

Ryan Pickle relieved Spaan on the mound in the sixth as the Owls put another run across on two hits and a pair of errors. The bottom of the inning started off with a Weir walk and a Ranker single to left center. Murphy drove in both runners with a triple to left center. Santoro drove him in with a double to the gap in left center to make it 17-5. After a couple of hit by pitches, Owen Berry hit a pinch hit single to score Santoro.

Kenyon attempted to rally back scoring two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth but Jacob Detwiler shut the Owls down in order in the ninth to give the Dutchmen the win.
