ANNVILLE, Pa. – Shane Stossel had another big day for the Lebanon Valley College baseball team, launching a three-run home run and recording his 100
th career hit during the club's doubleheader against DeSales University on Sunday, March 24 at McGill Field. The Dutchmen battled valiantly in the twin bill but dropped the matchups by scores of 13-9 in eight innings and 9-0.
Game One
Kyle McCracken started on the mound for Lebanon Valley and began the afternoon with a scoreless top of the first inning. DeSales had runners on second and third base with one out, but the sophomore registered a strikeout and a fly out to left field to get out of the frame. The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, taking a 3-0 lead on an RBI groundout, an RBI single, and an RBI double. DeSales added another run in the top of the third, making it a 4-0 game on an RBI single.
The Dutchmen answered back in the bottom half of the third, narrowing the score to 4-3. The club got runners on first second with one out, after
Pete Botbyl reached on a fielder's choice and
Logan Brewer hit an infield single to third base. Stossel then drove a three-run homer over the left-center field wall, plating Botbyl and Brewer. The Bulldogs responded in the top of the fourth inning, taking a 7-3 advantage after an RBI groundout, an RBI double, and an RBI single. LVC countered in the bottom of the fourth, trimming its deficit to 7-4 after
Kameron Wetzel hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score

DeSales added a couple of runs in the top of the fifth inning, going ahead 9-4 on a two-run double. Lebanon Valley answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, making it a 9-7 contest. Ranker came up to the plate when the bases were loaded with one out and brought home Brewer on an RBI groundout to second base.
Owen Berry then hit a two-run single through the right side, driving in
Duncan Weir and
Logan Fuga.
Tony Bennage maintained the score in the top of the sixth, tossing a scoreless frame while logging a strikeout for the third out. The Dutchmen plated a pair in the bottom of the sixth inning, tying the Bulldogs at 9-9.
Luke Pollock was up with the bases loaded with two outs and lined a clutch two-run single down the left-field line to even the score. Wetzel and Brewer crossed the plate on Pollock's key base hit.
Jacob Detwiler entered the game to pitch for LVC in the top of the seventh and posted a shutout inning with a groundout to first base, a strikeout, and a fly out to left field to retire the side in order. The game remained tied at the end of the seventh, sending the contest into extra innings. DeSales scored four runs in the top of the eighth, taking a 13-9 lead after a frame that included an RBI single. This would stand as the final score.
Inside the Box Score
- Stossel hit his fifth home run of the campaign while tying a season-high three RBIs. This marked the second straight game the senior left the yard.
- Brewer recorded a game-high three runs scored, tying his season high. The junior also had a hit and a walk.
- Pollock delivered the game-tying hit with his two-run single in the bottom of the sixth.
- Berry drove in a pair of runs with a single in the fifth.
- Ranker had a base hit, an RBI, a run scored, and a walk.
- Wetzel logged a hit with an RBI and a run scored.
- Weir had a base hit, a walk, a run scored, and a stolen base.
- Botbyl and Fuga each crossed the plate once.
- Bennage struck out a game-high three batters in two innings of relief.
- McCracken, Trey Dianna, and Detwiler each tallied a strikeout on the mound.
Game Two
DeSales got on the board in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI single through the right side. The Bulldogs added another run in the top of the second, advancing the score to 2-0 on an RBI single. The Dutchmen battled at the plate as the game progressed, generating traffic on the basepaths in the bottom of the third. The club got runners on first and second at the start of the frame, as Berry and
Eric Sees both hit singles through the right side.
In the top of the fourth,
Jacob Horton posted a 1-2-3 inning for Lebanon Valley with a groundout to shortstop, a fly out to right-center field, and a groundout to third base. Stossel led off the bottom half of the frame and made history with his single to left field, recording his 100
th career base hit. The Bulldogs then scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning, extending their advantage to 8-0 with a frame that included an RBI single and a two-run single.
The Flying Dutchmen kept competing in the batter's box as the game went on, as Weir led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to right-center before stealing second base.
Nathan Clarke pitched his second inning of relief for LVC in the top of the sixth, retiring the side in order while recording the third out on a strikeout. The Bulldogs then tacked on a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI groundout, prompting 9-0 to be the final score.
Inside the Box Score
- Stossel picked up his 100th career hit with his single in the fourth inning, extending his hitting streak to seven games.
- Weir hit a single in the bottom of the fifth and stole his second base of the day, bringing his season total to three.
- Berry and Sees both registered base hits.
- Horton struck out three batters in his start on the mound.
- Clarke had two strikeouts during a three-inning appearance out of the bullpen.
