Stossel Powers Dutchmen to Thrilling Win at DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Shane Stossel hit two home runs in the final three innings to give the Lebanon Valley baseball team a thrilling 9-8 extra-inning victory at DeSales University on Friday afternoon in the series opener between the teams at Weiland Park in Center Valley.

The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Bulldogs in the first meeting between the programs since 2015. LVC improved to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the MAC Freedom while dropping the Bulldogs to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

LVC struck first in the game with a big two-run first inning. Ryan Murphy led off the game by drawing a walk. He then stole second before Jace Fetterman had an infield single to second base that put runners on the corners. Stossel walked to load the bases and then Logan Brewer drove in a run with a fielder's choice to the first baseman where the Bulldogs tried getting the double play at second but the relay back to first was late. Luke Pollock then knocked in Fetterman with a single to left. The Bulldogs were able to get out of the inning with no more damage. In the bottom half, Andrew Spaan got two quick outs before DeSales drew three consecutive walks to load the bases. Spaan got out of the jam with a strikeout.

The Dutchmen added a run in the second as Murphy singled to right center, stole second, and then scored on a Stossel single to right field. Spaan struck out the side in the bottom of the inning. DeSales got on the scoreboard in the third on a walk and back-to-back singles with two outs to cut the lead to 3-1. Spaan got out of the jam with a fly ball to center field. LVC responded in the top of the fourth with an unearned run. Murphy got on base wih one out via a fielding error at third. Stossel and Brewer walked to load the bases and then Pollock drew a two-out walk after a pitching change to drive in Murphy.

DeSales countered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs to cut the lead to 4-3. The Bulldogs put the first two batters of the inning on with a pair of hits. A passed ball and then a wild pitch scored one run before a single to left scored the second run. Spaan got out of the jam by Joey Santora throwing out a running trying to steal and then a strikeout. LVC got a run back in the top of the fifth on an Owen Berry single up the middle, Kameron Wetzel being hit by a pitch, a Murphy walk, and then Santora being hit by a pitch to score Berry. The Bulldogs came right back and used a big three-run inning in the bottom half to take their first lead of the game. DeSales led off the inning with a single. A double to left and then a single to center plated one run before a single to right center tied the game up. The Bulldogs executed a sacrifice bunt to the right side of the pitcher's mound to score the go-ahead run before Spaan got out of the inning with a liner to short and a strikeout.

The scored remained the same until the eighth inning when Stossel led off with his 20th career home run to left field. Pollock reached base on an error and then scored from second on a Duncan Weir single up the middle where Weir raced all the way around to third as the throw home got away. Justin Ranked then drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center. The Bulldogs were able to tie the game up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth. Hunter Williams struck out the leadoff hitter before a walk, an infield single, and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. Williams struck out the next hitter for the second out of the inning but then a walk and a hit by pitch drove in two runs to tie the game up at eight. Malachi Duka entered the game and got a fly ball to right field to send the game to extras.

Stossel led off the top of the 10th with another blast over the left field fence to give LVC back the lead. Duka allowed a hit and a walk but struck out two in the bottom half of the inning to earn the thrilling victory.
