Eight-Run Fourth Inning Powers Dutchmen Baseball’s Victory over Immaculata

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– The Lebanon Valley College baseball team scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, helping propel the club to a 15-8 victory over Immaculata University on Tuesday, March 19 at McGill Field. 

The Dutchmen (8-6, 2-1 MAC Freedom) and the Mighty Macs (9-7) kept the game scoreless early, trading zeros through the first two and a half innings. Kyle McCracken started on the mound for LVC and blanked the opposition during this stretch with four strikeouts. The sophomore retired the side in order in the top of the third, registering a groundout to third base and a pair of strikeouts looking. 

Lebanon Valley opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, taking a 4-0 lead over Immaculata. Owen Berry started the rally with a one-out single to right field before stealing second base. Kameron Wetzel followed this by lining a single through the right side to score Berry, providing the first-year third baseman with his first career hit and RBI. Pete Botbyl then drove an RBI triple to the right-center field wall, plating Wetzel. The next batter was Jace Fetterman, who hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Botbyl. Later in the frame, Ryan Murphy hit an RBI single up the middle to score Logan Brewer.

The Flying Dutchmen kept the bats going in the bottom of the fourth with an eight-run frame, extending their advantage to 12-0. Brewer drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded, scoring Berry. Shane Stossel followed this with a two-run single to center field, driving in Fetterman and Wetzel. Later in the inning, Luke Pollock hit a two-run single through the left side to plate Stossel and Brewer. The big frame was completed by Justin Ranker's three-run homer that sailed over the left-center field wall, knocking in Pollock and Murphy. 

The Mighty Macs responded in the top of the fifth inning, narrowing their deficit to 12-6 after a frame that included two RBI singles and an RBI double. Immaculata added a couple more runs in the top of the six, making it a 12-8 ballgame with an RBI single and an RBI groundout to second base. Lebanon Valley got a couple of runs back in the bottom half of the sixth, claiming a 14-8 lead. The club scored after Ranker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate Brewer, and Berry was also hit by a pitch with the bases full to bring home Stossel. 

The Dutchmen tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, taking a 15-8 lead. Murphy extended the club's advantage to seven runs with a sacrifice fly to right-center, scoring Fetterman. Malachi Duka tossed his second inning of relief in the top of the eighth, posting a scoreless frame after a pop out to Ranker in foul territory, a strikeout, and a groundout to shortstop. Hunter Williams then closed out the victory by striking out a pair of batters in a shutout ninth inning.

  • The Dutchmen scored 15 runs on 13 hits and seven walks. The club scored eight runs in the fourth inning with two outs. 
  • Ranker hit his first home run of the season while going 1-for-3 with a game-high and season-high four RBIs. The junior has knocked in 10 runs for LVC this year. 
  • Stossel went 2-for-2 while driving in two runs and scoring twice. The senior has tallied 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored during the campaign. 
  • Pollock posted a 1-for-4 afternoon with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. 
  • Murphy went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, a walk, and a run scored. The senior has driven in 14 runs this season, which leads the team. 
  • Brewer went 1-for-3 with two walks, an RBI, and a game-high and season-high three runs scored. The junior has recorded 10 RBIs this year.
  • Wetzel went 2-for-5, picking up his first two career hits while registering his first RBI and his first two runs scored.
  • Botbyl went 2-for-5 with his second triple of the season, driving in a run and crossing the plate once during the process. 
  • Fetterman registered a 1-for-4 game with an RBI and two runs scored. The junior has knocked in 10 runs this year.
  • Berry went 2-for-3 with an RBI while tying a season-high two runs scored. The sophomore also stole his first base of the campaign. 
  • Duka was credited with his first win of the season while striking out three.
  • McCracken struck out four in his start on the mound. 
  • Tony Bennage and Ryan Pickle both fanned a batter.
  • Williams struck out two in a scoreless ninth.

The Dutchmen will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 22, as the program will open its series against DeSales University at Weiland Park in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.
