SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Colin Hughes scored two goals to lead the Lebanon Valley men's lacrosse team in a 16-6 defeat at Susquehanna University on Wednesday afternoon at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.
Hughes gave the Dutchmen (3-4) an early lead against the River Hawks (6-1) with an unassisted goal 2:30 into the game.
Jake Bollinger made it 2-0 in favor of the Dutchmen nearly a minute later as he scored a man-up goal off an assist from
Alex Kiviniemi. Susquehanna responded with three consecutive goals to take a 3-2 lead with 3:40 remaining in the first quarter. The Dutchmen struck right back as
John Lux tied the game with an unassisted goal and then
Trey Ralston scored with 19 seconds left to give LVC back the lead. The River Hawks won the following faceoff and scored to tie the game at four after the first 15 minutes of action.
The Dutchmen scored the first goal of the second period as Lux found Hughes across the middle for his second goal of the game. The River Hawks tightened up the defense and didn't allow another LVC goal until the fourth quarter. The Dutchmen were still leading 5-4 with five minutes to go in the half before Susquehanna rattled off four goals in the final five minutes to take an 8-5 lead into the break.
The teams battled up and down the turf during the third quarter. Susquehanna was able to score three times in the period on 10 shots while holding the Dutchmen scoreless on eight shots including three on goal. The River Hawks kept the goal streak up into the fourth quarter as they scored five times in the first 10 minutes of the quarter to go up 16-5.
Sean Poole scored with just over two minutes left off a nice pass by
Jacob Mrose to set the final score.
Inside the Box
- Hughes scored twice on seven shots. He put five shots on goal and had two ground balls.
- Lux finished with two points on a goal and an assist. He has recorded at least one point in every game this season.
- Bollinger took a team-high 10 shots and scored once on four shots on goal.
- Kellen Markley made 12 saves in goal and picked up two ground balls.
- Rowan Myers had three caused turnovers.
- The Dutchmen were 13-17 on clear attempts.
