HERSHEY, Pa. – Goaltender
Mia Frisoni made 52 saves for the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team as the program battled valiantly, dropping a close 1-0 contest to Nazareth University on Friday, Feb. 9 at Hersheypark Arena.
The Flying Dutchmen and Golden Flyers went back and forth defensively early, keeping the game scoreless for nearly 10 minutes at the start. Frisoni helped limit the opposition during this stretch, recording eight saves in the first 8:38. Nazareth then got on the scoreboard 9:50 into the first period, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Abby Flanagan.
Lebanon Valley generated some offensive opportunities later in the frame, including a pair of shots on goal within six seconds by
Anna Dale in a stretch that began near the end of the 12
th minute. The Golden Flyers also sent 10 more shots toward the net through the remaining minutes of the period, but Frisoni saved each of these attempts. The goaltender made a couple of saves within six seconds during the 17
th minute.
The programs continued to battle on the defensive end in the second period, keeping each other off the board. Frisoni was dominant in the frame, posting 21 more saves for LVC. Dale,
Grace Mayer, and
Norah McCauliffe also contributed to these efforts, blocking a shot each in the first 6:11. Nazareth registered 10 shots on goal within the opening 8:49 of the second, but Frisoni saved each attempt.
The Dutchmen also worked to create scoring chances, as five players sent the puck toward the net in the second.
Ava Waugaman and Dale each took a shot on goal within 29 seconds in a stretch that started near the end of the 10
th minute. Defensively, Frisoni held the opposition in check during a key stretch late in the period, recording four saves over 49 seconds in the 18
th minute.
Lebanon Valley and Nazareth kept competing defensively as the contest went into the third period. The Flying Dutchmen generated some offensive opportunities early in the frame, as
Alexa Spiers and
Cheyenne Wilk both tallied shots in the second minute. Later in the period,
Katie Pounder sent two shots toward the net within 25 seconds in the eighth minute.
LVC also continued to deliver a strong defensive effort as the third period progressed. The program blocked five shots while Frisoni made 13 saves during the final 20 minutes of play. The goaltender made six saves during a stretch of 2:25 that began in the 14
th minute, including a pair within four seconds in the 16
th minute.
Alexis Oukes and
Tiffany Anderson also both blocked shots during the final 2:25 of play. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the remainder of the period.
