HERSHEY, Pa. – Jess Dawe netted her first goal of the season for the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team, as the program dropped a hard-fought 3-1 game to Alvernia University on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Hersheypark Arena.
The Flying Dutchmen and the Golden Wolves competed defensively early in the contest, keeping each other scoreless through the first six minutes. Alvernia then got on the board 6:04 into the first period, taking a 1-0 lead on a short-handed goal by Julia Franklin. Lebanon Valley also created offensive opportunities as the frame progressed, sending the puck toward the net five times over the next 4:32.
Tiffany Anderson,
Anna Dale, and
Ava Waugaman all took shots during this stretch.
The Dutchmen got on the scoreboard 10:36 into the first, tying the contest at 1-1. Dawe recorded two consecutive shots and got the puck past the goaltender on the second attempt to even the score.
Alexa Spiers was credited with the assist on the game-tying goal. The program was also productive defensively through the remainder of the period, keeping the opposition off the board during the final 9:24. Goaltender
Lacy Bigelow tallied seven saves for LVC over this span.
Alvernia then scored 4:36 into the second period, taking a 2-1 advantage on another goal by Franklin. The programs proceeded to go back and forth defensively through the rest of the frame, keeping it a one-point game over the remaining 15:24. Bigelow made five more saves in the second, including two within seven seconds during the 16
th minute.
Lebanon Valley also worked to generate scoring chances, attempting nine shots on goal during this stretch.
Erin Yorke sent the puck toward the net twice and
Katie Pounder took a shot during a power play that began near the end of the ninth minute. Spiers also tallied two attempts within seven seconds in the 12
th minute.
The programs continued to limit each other on the defensive end in the third period, keeping the opposition off the board for over seven minutes at the start. Bigelow made seven saves for LVC over the opening 5:39. The Golden Wolves took a pair of shots within two seconds during the first minute of the period, but the goaltender saved each of these attempts.
Alvernia added a point 7:13 into the third, advancing the score to 3-1 on a goal by Jasmine Hughes. The Dutchmen kept battling offensively as the period went on, as four players recorded shots on goal during the remaining minutes.
Tiffany Anderson contributed to these efforts, sending the puck toward the goaltender twice during this stretch. Defensively, Bigelow made seven more saves for Lebanon Valley during the final 12:47. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of the contest.
