Big Second Periods Powers Women’s Ice Hockey to Season-Opening Win

HERSHEY, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Women's Ice Hockey team used a huge second period with four goals to defeat visiting Chatham University 5-4 on Tuesday evening at Hersheypark Arena.

The Dutchmen took control of the puck early in the matchup and dominated possession over the first couple minutes of the game. LVC was called for a penalty at 3:52 and eight seconds later the Cougars took the lead as a shot from the left side snuck inside the pipe for a goal. The Dutchmen battled back as Jess Dawe and Anna Dale had shots saved. Chatham was able to increase their lead just before the seven-minute mark of the game as another shot just snuck inside the upper left of the goal.

Brysha Schmidt blocked a pair of shots and then Julianne Barrette made a save before the Dutchmen used a strong offensive attack over the final 12 minutes of the period. LVC took 10 shots over a four-minute span with six shots being saved and two shots blocked. The Dutchmen went on their first power play opportunity of the season with just under seven minutes to play. Tiffany Anderson and Addison Taylert put shots on goal during the two-minute minor, but the Cougars held the Dutchmen off the board. Cheyenne Wilk cut the lead in half with the first goal of the season at 16:48 with Leela Nemani getting credit for the assist.

The Dutchmen came out firing in the second period scoring twice in the first five minutes to take a 3-2 lead. Dale scored the first goal 2:41 into the period off assists by Sky Campanile and Erin Yorke to tie the game. Not even two minutes later, Maeghan Howson scored off a great pass from Norah McCauliffe to put the Dutchmen ahead. Schmidt also earned an assist on the goal. The Dutchmen kept the pressure on the Cougars as Dale and Dawe had shots saved. Anderson increased the lead to 4-2 at 8:44 of the period as she knocked in her own rebound on a great tap in after a save. Dale and Yorke set her up for the one-on-one with the goalie to earn assists. The junior assistant captain wasn't done in the period as she scored again with the eventual game-winning goal off a great pass back from Dale with just over two minutes to play in the period.

LVC continued the strong play into the third period as they outshot the Cougars 8-2 over the first seven scoreless minutes. Chatham was able to cut into the lead with just under 11 minutes to play with a goal off a rebound 30 seconds after the Dutchmen killed off a power play opportunity for the Cougars. Chatham battled hard to cut the lead even more, but the Dutchmen were able to take care of the puck while continuing to fire shots at the goal. The Cougars pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with 4:35 remaining and found the back of the net 24 seconds later to make it a one-goal game. Chatham would bring their goalie back in for 30 seconds before returning to an empty net for the final 3:34. The Dutchmen allowed just one shot on goal during the final minutes of the game while taking six shots at the empty net. Howson just missed scoring from deep before the Cougars blocked four shots.
