Harold Bowman '24, a former Lebanon Valley College Esports team member, recently took another step toward achieving his dream of working in professional esports by joining the University of Southern Mississippi as an Esports Graduate Assistant.
Bowman is producing the livestream competitions for Southern Mississippi's Esports team while enrolled in Southern Mississippi's Master's in Sports Management Program.
"I've increased the production value while improving the consistency of streams in quality and quantity. I also supervise a team of undergraduate students who assist in making these improvements and consistency happen," said Bowman.
Bowman set himself up to succeed as a Graduate Assistant at Southern Mississippi by taking advantage of every opportunity to improve his skills during his four years with LVC's Esports team. He gained the most experience commentating on LVC's competitions on Twitch, the livestreaming service.
In addition to running the livestream and serving as a broadcaster, he managed the team's social media accounts and wrote recap articles for GoDutchmen.com and
La Vie Collegienne, LVC's student-run newspaper. Bowman even served as a second coach for the Call of Duty: Vanguard team and occasionally competed in tournaments.
Bowman expressed that while attending a new university has been an adjustment, he has enjoyed the chance to advance his skills in esports.
"It's been a pretty fun and challenging experience as there's a whole new system I have had to learn for streaming in their space compared to what I had in Annville," Bowman said. "There are also an unbelievable amount of great players and staff who have been very helpful in getting me into this new environment."
Looking to the future, Bowman conveyed that he aspires to work in multiple aspects of esports.
"I want to be at the top of esports in some capacity," Bowman said. "While production is my main gig at the moment, I would truly love to keep commentating. It's probably what I enjoy the most, but that's a pretty tough space to break into, so I need to keep up with my production skills. Being involved with the professional level of esports would be the dream job for me."
Bowman is grateful for his time with Lebanon Valley's Esports team, where he made lifelong memories and enhanced his production and commentary skills.
"There are so many great things I got to experience with our teams," Bowman said. "I traveled to tournaments for the first time in my life, and those events were always incredible. The fact that I commentated on the competitions of my friends for three years as they grew and developed with me is something very special to me, too."
