GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Field Hockey team handed conference-leading Arcadia University its first conference loss of the season with a dominating 5-1 victory over the Knights on Wednesday evening at Jean Lenox West Field in Glenside.
LVC (14-3, 4-2 MAC Freedom) held the Knights (11-7, 5-1 MAC Freedom) without a shot or penalty corner for the first 45 minutes of the game while dominating possession. The Dutchmen controlled possession from the first hit of the game. The Arcadia defense was able to keep the Dutchmen from taking a shot for the first eight minutes as LVC kept the ball on their offensive side of the field most of the time.
Claire Weidenhammer took the first shot of the game in the ninth minute, and it was blocked leading to a penalty corner.
Gracie Johnson inserted the corner to
Sorrell Long at the top of the circle and made its way around to
Abby Rodenberger on the left side. Rodenberger sent ball towards the goal that was collected by Weidenhammer in front of the cage and knocked in for the first goal of the game.
A couple minutes later, LVC struck again as Weidenhammer received a long pass and dribbled the ball into the circle. The sophomore sent a pass to
Lexi Ward on the left side and Ward took one dribble to get around the goalie and hit the ball into the back of the empty cage for a 2-0 lead. The Dutchmen kept the pressure on and earned a penalty corner early in the 14th minute. Johnson inserted the ball to Long once again. The ball made its way
Rebecca Lane who fired the ball in towards the goalie. The ball hit off the keeper's pads right to Weidenhammer who tapped it into the back of the cage for her second goal of the game.
The Dutchmen came out in the second quarter and continued the pressure on the Arcadia defense as Long had a shot saved in the 18th minute. LVC earned a penalty stroke in the 23rd minute and Long made it count as she put the ball into the back of the cage. LVC pressed for more goals as Lane and a pair of shots saved and Rodenberger had a rebound shot knocked away before halftime.
LVC didn't let up after halftime as they did not allow the Knight to gain any sort of momentum.
Jenna Angstadt had a shot saved 49 seconds into the period and Long had a shot blocked off a penalty corner in the 39th minute. The Knights had their first offensive stat of the night 19 seconds into the fourth quarter as they were awarded a penalty corner.
Ella Weidenhammer came up with a big save off a shot following the insertion of the corner. Arcadia was awarded another corner and this time the defense blocked a shot before it got to Weidenhammer. The Dutchmen received a green card in the 52nd minute to go a woman down. That didn't stop them from scoring as they intercepted the restart and drove the ball into the circle on along pass from Johnson. Ward received the pass, dribbled around the goalie and shot the ball into the back of the cage for her second goal of the night.
Arcadia responded with a pair of shots off a penalty corner. Both were saved by Weidenhammer. The Knights earned back-to-back corners and managed to score off the second one in the 54th minute to make it 5-1. The Dutchmen controlled possession the rest of the way and had shots by Weidenhammer and Johnson saved following penalty corner attempts.
