McInerney Records 28 Kills at York Tri-Match

YORK, Pa. – Taylor McInerney moved into fifth place on the Lebanon Valley Volleyball career kills list with 28 kills on Saturday in a pair of matches at York College of Pennsylvania. The Dutchmen dropped a tough 3-2 match against the host Spartans and then fell 3-0 to Bridgewater College
 
Match One vs. York
The Dutchmen got out to a slow start as the Spartans won the first set 25-15. LVC won the next two sets 25-23 and 25-16 before York rallied to win the next two sets 25-20 and 15-13.
 
York got out to a 6-3 lead in the first set. The Dutchmen won the next two points to cut it to 6-5 but then the Spartans won the next seven points. Lyla Arfanella used a strong serve including three consecutive aces to cut the lead to 18-13 and force York to call a timeout. The Spartans came out of the timeout and closed out the set by winning seven of the next nine points.
 
The Spartans won four of the first five points in the second set. LVC came right back and won four of the next five points to even things up at five. The score was still tied at eight when York used a 4-0 run to go up 12-8. The Dutchmen responded with a big run of their own and a Teaguen Reynolds ace gave LVC the lead at 14-13. The teams battled back and forth throughout the rest of the set with York holding a slim 23-21 lead. McInerney had a kill, and an attack error tied things up before two bad sets gave LVC the set victory.
 
The third set was close to start until LVC used a 5-0 run with Jasmine Sullivan serving to take a 16-13 lead. York cut it to one-point before the Dutchmen closed strong as Libby Lindau, Sullivan, and Mattea Penner had consecutive kills to end the set at 25-16. The Spartans got off to a strong start in the fourth set and built a 12-6 advantage. They were able to get the lead up to 19-12 before LVC cut it down to four points with four on the next five points. The teams traded four-point runs before York was able to send the match to a fifth set with a kill.
 
Jillian Jefferys and McInerney gave the Dutchmen a 2-1 lead in the fifth set. York won three of the next four points to take a 5-3 lead. The lead was 8-6 when the teams switched sides. A Reynolds service ace gave the Dutchmen an 11-10 lead, but the Spartans responded with three straight points to get to match point. McInerney extended the match with a kill but then York was able to win the set with a kill of their own.
 
Inside the Box
  • Penner and McInerney led the attack with 16 kills each. Penner added 13 digs, two assists and an ace.
  • Jefferys had six kills and two total blocks.
  • Sofia Okronley finished with 20 assists while Sullivan had 18.
  • Abigail Souder recorded a season-high 20 digs
 
Match Two vs. Bridgewater
The Dutchmen played Bridgewater tight in all three sets with the Eagles winning by scores of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-19. Sullivan began the match with an ace but then the Eagles socre seven of the next 10 points to take a 7-lead. The Dutchmen responded with a three-point run ending on a Okronley ace. Bridgewater countered with a 6-2 run to extend the advantage to 13-8. McInerney had a pair of kills to get LVC back withing two points, but Bridgewater responded with another run to build a 22-14 lead. The Eagles finished the set with three of the final five points.
 
The Eagles jumped out to a 4-1 lead to begin the second set. Kills by Reynolds and Margaret Cole cut the deficit to one. LVC tied the set at six following a McInerney kill and an attack error. The Eagles scored the next five points and LVC responded with four of the following five points to make it 12-10 after a block assist by Reynolds and Penner. A pair of aces from Okronley made it 15-13 before the Eagles used a 5-0 run to go up by seven. Bridgewater extended the lead to 24-15 to get to set point. McInerney had a kill, and a bad set by BC brought LVC's point total to 17 before the Eagles were able to score the final point of the set.
 
The Dutchmen got off to a strong start in the third with seven of the first 11 points. A kill by Cole made it 8-5 before the Eagles were able to cut the lead down to one point at 9-8. Penner had a pair of kills and Okronley served up an ace to put LVC up 13-8 before the Eagles used a 8-3 run to tied things up at 16. The Dutchmen lead by one at 18-17 when the Eagles scored five consecutive points to take a four-point lead. The Eagles won three of the next four points to take the set and the match.
 
Inside the Box
  • McInerney had a team-high 12 kills to give her 1,320 for her career. She began the fifth in program history to record over 1,300 kills in a career.
  • Penner had seven kills while Reynolds, Cole, and Lindau had three each.
  • Okronley recorded 14 assists and five aces while Sullivan added 11 assists and two aces.
  • Souder led the team with 17 digs.

The Dutchmen will celebrate Senior Night on Tuesday as they host Delaware Valley University at 7 p.m. in the final home game of the year.
