ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley Volleyball first-year
Jasmine Sullivan had a program record nine service aces as the Dutchmen defeated King's 3-0 on Wednesday evening inside Sorrentino Gymnasium.
LVC improved to 13-9 overall and 4-1 in conference play with the victory while King's fell to 16-7 overall and 0-5 in the MAC Freedom. The Dutchmen won by scores of 25-17, 25-12, and 25-18 while also moving into a three-way tie for first place in the conference as Stevens Institute of Technology defeated DeSales 3-0.
Mattea Penner scored the first two points of the match on a kill and a service ace. LVC still led by two at 4-2 when Sullivan recorded her first ace of the match and then
Margaret Cole and
Libby Lindau recorded a block. The Dutchmen grew the lead to 10-6 and then broke the set open with five straight points. Penner started the run with a kill and ended it with a service ace. The teams traded points to get the set to 19-10 in favor of LVC when King's used a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 20-15. Penner and
Taylor McInerney had a kill each and the Dutchmen used a pair of blocks to get to set point. McInerney ended the set with a big kill from
Sofia Okronley. Penner led the attack with five kills and two aces in the set while McInerney had four kills. LVC was strong at the net with five blocks and
Abigail Souder led the team with three digs.
The Monarchs scored the first three points of the second set before a kill by Penner and a block assist by
Jillian Jefferys and
Teaguen Reynolds cut the lead to 3-2. The Dutchmen scored four of the next six points to take a 6-5 lead with Sullivan set to serve. The setter rattled off two aces on her first three serves and ended a 15-0 run with five consecutive aces to put the Dutchmen up 20-5. King's was able to rally to cut the lead to 23-11 but that was as close as they would get in the set. Sullivan had eight total aces in the set while McInerney added five kills.
Reynolds began the third set with a kill before the Monarchs scored the next two points. McInerney had a pair of kills to give LVC back the lead. The Monarchs tied the set up twice before two kills by Lindau and a kill from Penner gave the Dutchmen a three-point advantage. LVC slowly started to increase the lead and after back-to-back kills from Penner the advantage was at 19-12. King's used a small run to get within three at 20-17 but two blocks by the Dutchmen and two kills from McInerney put LVC at match point. McInerney then used a big swing to end the match and keep the Dutchmen in the running for the top seed in the conference.
Inside the Box
- Sullivan had nine service aces and 18 assists to pace the Dutchmen. Her nine aces in a match surpasses the previous record of eight that was accomplished by Amanda Bahn three times during the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
- The Dutchmen had three hitters with double digit kills led by McInerney with 16 on 25 attacks with no errors for a fantastic .640 hitting percentage.
- Penner finished with 11 kills and two aces while Lindau had 10 kills.
- Okronley led the team with 19 assists while Souder had a team-high eight digs.
- The Dutchmen had seven total blocks with 14 block assists. Reynolds led the team with five while Jefferys had three.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will play the final tri-match of the year on Saturday at York College of Pennsylvania. LVC will take on the host Spartans first at 11 a.m. before facing a strong Bridgewater College team.
