ANNVILLE, Pa. – Kevin Donahue scored his first career game-winning goal for the Lebanon Valley College Men's Soccer team, as the program defeated Arcadia University for a 2-0 Homecoming victory on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Herbert Field.
Will Burton also netted a key goal for LVC, and goalkeeper
Dalton Fitterling posted a shutout.
The Dutchmen (7-4-2, 1-0-1 MAC Freedom) worked to generate offensive opportunities early, recording six total shots in just over 20 minutes at the start.
Charlie McCormick contributed to these efforts, as he logged a shot on goal that was saved at the 9:35 mark. The Knights (10-3-1, 1-1-0 MAC Freedom) countered with a shot that went to the left of the net 12:23 into the game. This was later followed by
Aidan Negron sending a shot toward the net for LVC, which was saved at the 20:37 mark.
The programs proceeded to go back and forth defensively for nearly 19 minutes, maintaining the scoreless tie over this stretch. Lebanon Valley then got on the board 39:36 into the first half, taking a 1-0 lead over Arcadia. The team got its offensive rolling by Donahue sending a shot into the right corner of the net, courtesy of an assist by
Ben Ammon. The Flying Dutchmen also continued their strong defensive effort through the end of the first, preventing the opposition from taking a shot on goal in the half. This prompted LVC to take its one-goal advantage into halftime.
Lebanon Valley kept registering shots as the match went into the second half, as the program had five total attempts with four shots on goal just over 10 minutes into the stanza.
Aaron Weitzel sent a pair of shots toward the net for LVC, recording tries that were saved at the 47:57 and 50:10 marks.
Simon Grimes then logged an attempt that was saved 52:20 into the contest before
Nathan Prex had a shot that was saved 55:06 into the game.
The Dutchmen also remained dominant on the defensive end, limiting the Knights to three total shots for over 18 minutes at the start of the second half. Arcadia took its first shot on goal at the 64:45 mark, but goalkeeper
Dalton Fitterling was there to make the save for Lebanon Valley. The graduate student goalie then made another important save for LVC 70:37 into the match, helping preserve the program's lead.
The Flying Dutchmen put another tally on the scoreboard at the 74:13 mark, going ahead 2-0 over the Knights. The scoring chance began with Burton knocking down an Arcadia pass that was headed the other way, leading to the sophomore taking the ball into the box. Burton capped off the play by sending a shot past the diving attempt of the goalkeeper and into the center of the net for an unassisted goal. Lebanon Valley's defense remained stellar through the end of the game, as the squad kept the opposition from taking a shot on goal during the final 15:47.
