RYE, N.Y. – Anna Dale scored her fourth goal of the year for the Lebanon Valley women's ice hockey team on Friday evening, but host Manhattanville College used a big third period to defeat the Dutchmen 5-1 at Playland Ice Casino in Rye, N.Y.
Manhatanville won the opening faceoff and took the first shot of the game within the first 30 seconds.
Grace Mayer skated in front and blocked the shot for the Dutchmen. LVC won the took the puck down the other end of the ice where
Katie Pounder had two shots saved. The teams battled up and down the ice over the first five minutes with the Valiants starting to gain a little home-ice momentum putting five shots on goal that were kept out of the back of the net by
Mia Frisoni. The Dutchmen stopped the momentum in the eighth minute as
Alexa Spiers and
Erin Yorke had shots just kept out of the net before Dale put away the first goal of the game at 7:37 off assists by Mayer and
Tiffany Anderson.
The Valiants responded with three shots on goal during the next minute of play that were saved by Frisoni. LVC went on the first power play of the game at 9:39 and put a lot of pressure on the Valiants as they looked to increase their lead. LVC put took six shots and put five of them on goal during the two-minute advantage. However, M'Ville was able to keep the Dutchmen off the scoreboard with a few great saves by graduate student Franny Gerardi. The teams traded penalties and power play opportunities for most of the remainder of the period with neither team able to score. The Valiants took four shots during their opportunities while LVC had one shot during just 26 seconds of their second opportunity of the game.
Manhattanville came out of the first intermission swinging putting three shots wide in the first minute.
Cheyenne Wilk had a great opportunity for the Dutchmen on an 2v1 breakaway early in the period but her shot to the upper right was knocked away by Gerardi. The Valiants were able to tie the game up at 4:43 as Charlotte Stanwood knocked in a rebound after Firsoni made an excellent diving save. LVC had an excellent opportunity to retake the lead midway through the period as a pair of M'Ville penalties gave the Dutchmen a two-woman advantage for a little over one minute. The Dutchmen had a pair of shots by Anderson blocked during the two-woman advantage before Gerardi saved shots by Spiers,
Norah McCauliffe and Pounder during the final minute of having a one-woman advantage. LVC kept the pressure on the Valiants late in the period as Anderson, Dale, and
Victoria Scurto all had shots saved before
Brenna Mulcahy and McCauliffe had shots blocked in the final two minutes.
The Dutchmen opened the third period strong winning the opening faceoff and bringing the puck inside the blue line where Spiers sent a shot wide within the first 10 seconds. LVC grabbed the rebound and Gerardi made a pair of great saves on shots by Mulcahy and
Maeghan Howson to keep the game tied. McCauliffe and
Jess Dawe had shots saved as the Dutchmen kept the pressure on during the opening minutes. Manhattanville scored the go-ahead goal at 3:12 as they took advantage of a turnover by the Dutchmen and snuck the puck into the back of the net. They quickly made it a two-goal lead 15 seconds later as Virginia Birnie fired a shot from the left side into the upper right corner off a LVC turnover following winning the faceoff. The lead grew to 4-1 at 7:32 as Manhattanville scored a power play goal. The Dutchmen fought hard to cut into the lead as Anderson, Dawe, and
Ava Waugaman tried to beat Gerardi, but the graduate student denied the shots. The Valiants were able to get another insurance goal with 5:21 remaining to set the final score. The Dutchmen took eight shots in the final five minutes with three shots blocked, two shots saved, and three shots wide.
Inside the Box
- Dale scored for the second consecutive game to record her fifth career point.
- Mayer had the primary assist, her fifth assist of the year and 13th of her career. The senior had one blocked shot.
- Anderson recorded an assist for the second consecutive game and now has seven career assists. The sophomore won 10 of 19 faceoffs and took four shots.
- Spiers led the Dutchmen with six shots taking two in each period.
- McCauliffe led the team with three blocked shots. As a team LVC blocked 17 shots, their third-most in a game this season.
- Frisoni made 35 saves with double digits in each period. She stopped all 13 shots she faced in the first period and then made 11 saves in each of the second and third periods.
- LVC scored first for the seventh time this year.
