HERSHEY, Pa. – Erin Yorke scored a goal and recorded two assists on Saturday, Jan. 13, helping lead the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Neumann University at Hersheypark Arena.
The Flying Dutchmen didn't waste any time getting on the board, taking a 1-0 lead over the Knights just 22 seconds into the game.
Maeghan Howson opened the scoring by sending a shot past the goaltender, following assists by
Alexa Spiers and Yorke. Neumann then responded 7:15 into the first period, tying the game at 1-1 on a power-play goal by Jamiyah Alexander.
The programs proceeded to battle defensively, maintaining the score until there were less than two minutes left in the opening frame. Goaltender
Mia Frisoni helped limit the opposition early, recording seven saves during the period. Lebanon Valley reclaimed its advantage near the end of the first, making it a 2-1 game with 1:54 remaining. The program went ahead on a power-play goal by Yorke, courtesy of an assist by Howson.
The Dutchmen and the Knights also went back and forth on the defensive end during the second period. LVC held Neumann to just two shots on goal in frame two, keeping the opposition off the scoreboard during this stretch. Lebanon Valley remained aggressive offensively, sending 18 more shots toward the net. The squad registered four attempts in the 16
th minute, as
Anna Dale took two shots while
Jess Dawe and
Tiffany Anderson each tallied a shot. The program took its one-goal lead into the final period.
The Dutchmen added an insurance point 5:47 into the third, extending their advantage to 3-1. Dale made it a two-point game on a power-play goal after assists from Yorke and Anderson. Lebanon Valley also got the job done defensively in the final frame, blanking Neumann with nine saves by Frisoni.
LVC created several scoring chances in the third as well, taking 12 shots on goal during the last 20 minutes of play. Spiers sent the puck toward the net three times during the period, while six other players also took shots.
Victoria Scurto capped off the game with an empty net goal when there were just four seconds left on the clock, providing the Flying Dutchmen with the 4-1 win.
