ASTON, Pa. – Chelly Wolff scored her first career goal for the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team, as the program tied Neumann University 2-2 in overtime on Friday, Jan. 12. The Dutchmen also earned an extra point in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) standings, picking up a 2-1 victory in the shootout on the game-winning goal by
Victoria Scurto.
The Flying Dutchmen and the Knights battled defensively in the first period, keeping the game scoreless through the opening 20 minutes. Goaltender
Lacy Bigelow helped limit the opposition during the frame, saving all four shots on goal that came her way. The program also kept Neumann from taking a shot until 7:07 into the game, when Bigelow made her first save.
Lebanon Valley worked to generate scoring chances during the period as well, attempting 14 shots on goal. Seven of the program's shots came during a power play that began in the 17
th minute.
Anna Dale and
Tiffany Anderson contributed to the team's offensive efforts during the first frame, taking three shots on goal each.
Neumann then opened the scoring seven seconds into period two, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jamiyah Alexander. Lebanon Valley remained aggressive offensively as the contest progressed, taking eight shots on goal during the first nine minutes of the second frame. The Dutchmen registered three attempts within 26 seconds during a stretch that began in the seventh minute, as
Norah McCauliffe,
Madelynn Debelis, and
Kaia Carlson each took shots.
The Flying Dutchmen got on the scoreboard with 7:29 remaining in the second frame, tying the game at 1-1.
Erin Yorke evened the score by sending a shot past the goaltender, following assists by
Grace Mayer and
Brenna Mulcahy. The squad then continued to create chances as the period went on, attempting five more shots on goal. Ultimately, the contest entered the third in a 1-1 stalemate.
The Dutchmen resumed the scoring 2:36 into the third period, taking a 2-1 advantage over the Knights. LVC went ahead after Wolff sent a goal into the net, courtesy of an assist by Mayer. Neumann responded 19 seconds later, tying the game at 2-2 on a goal by Gia Santorello. Both teams remained aggressive offensively during the remainder of regulation, taking eight shots each. Defensively, Bigelow came through with two clutch saves during the final 30 seconds, helping send the contest to overtime.
Lebanon Valley took the first two shots on goal of overtime, as Anderson and Dale both sent the puck toward the net during the first 36 seconds. Neumann followed this with a shot on goal 2:24 into the frame, but Bigelow made a save to preserve the tie. The score remained even at 2-2 after the five-minute overtime period, securing the tie and prompting the game to go into the shootout.
Carlson opened up the shootout by skating toward the right side of the net and sending a backhanded shot by the goaltender, putting LVC up 1-0. Neumann responded by Santorello making a shot to tie it at 1-1. The Dutchmen answered right back, as Scurto went to the left side of the net and converted a backhanded shot of her own to give the squad a 2-1 advantage. The shootout was later capped off by Bigelow making a save on the Knights' last shot.
