Jirgens and Tosto Score Goals for Men’s Ice Hockey at Stevenson

REISTERSTOWN, Md. ­­ Haralds Jirgens and Blake Tosto netted goals for the Lebanon Valley College men's ice hockey team, as the program dropped a 6-2 game to No. 15 Stevenson University on Friday, Jan. 12 at Reisterstown Sportsplex. 

The Dutchmen and the Mustangs went back and forth throughout the first period, as each squad attempted to create scoring chances. Lebanon Valley took eight shots on goal during the frame, as seven players sent the puck toward the net. The program took four shots on goal within 15 seconds during the final minute of the period, as Cameron Croteau, Jered Stevenson, Harris Blackwood, and Troy Andrews registered attempts. 

Goaltender Chris Branch also helped limit the opposition during the frame, saving all 12 shots on goal by Stevenson. The sophomore made three saves within 56 seconds, during a stretch that began in the 10th minute. This strong defensive effort prompted the contest to be in a scoreless tie at the end of the first 20 minutes. 

Stevenson opened the scoring 3:28 into the second period, taking a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Matt Yeager. The Mustangs later took a 3-0 advantage, after a goal by Kyle Lightfoot 4:11 into the frame and a goal by Liam McCanney at the 6:09 mark. The Dutchmen continued to generate offensive opportunities during the period, taking 11 shots on goal within the first 10:09. 

Lebanon Valley got on the board 11:13 into the second, narrowing the score to 3-1. Jirgens sent a shot past the goaltender, courtesy of assists by Stevenson and Ethan Hoover. The Flying Dutchmen added another tally 2:29 later, making it a 3-2 game on a goal by Tosto. Cade Helmer was credited with the assist on the senior's sixth goal of the season. Stevenson then responded 15:18 into the frame, taking a 4-2 lead on a goal by Graeme McCrory.

The programs began the third period by battling on the defensive end. Branch made nine saves for LVC during the first 8:10 of the frame, while Brendan Yingling, Artem Mikhaylov, and Jirgens also blocked shots during this span. The Mustangs later advanced the score to 6-2 with 10:23 remaining, as Blake Benson scored a power-play goal 8:27 into the period and Jack Karlsson scored 9:37 into the third.

The Dutchmen kept creating scoring opportunities as the frame progressed, taking seven shots on goal during the remainder of the period. The squad took three shots within 21 seconds during the 16th minute, as Tosto, Mikhaylov, and Hoover all sent attempts toward the net. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of the contest.
