Ward Tallies Two Points for Field Hockey Against Alvernia

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– Junior forward Lexi Ward scored a goal and dished out an assist on Saturday, as the Lebanon Valley College field hockey team dropped a close 4-3 game to Alvernia University at Arnold Field. 

The Flying Dutchmen (6-4) delivered a strong effort against the Golden Wolves (4-5), battling all afternoon after trailing in the first half. The programs swapped goals in the first quarter, before Alvernia found the back of the cage twice in the second frame to take a two-goal lead into halftime. The Dutchmen were aggressive offensively in the second half, as the team took a total of 12 shots and managed to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth quarter. The Golden Wolves then added a goal late, which proved to be the difference in the contest. 

Lebanon Valley opened the scoring early, taking a 1-0 lead over Alvernia 5:44 into the game. Ward got LVC on the board by sending a shot to the back of the cage, following an assist by senior midfielder Sorrell Long. Alvernia responded later in the first quarter, tying the game at 1-1 on a goal by Abbie Buck.

The Golden Wolves then took a 2-1 advantage 6:03 into the second quarter on a goal by Caroline Martin. Alvernia tacked on another point just 3:26 later, extending its lead to 3-1 on a goal by Olivia Hess. This was the score as the game went into halftime. 

Lebanon Valley chipped away at its deficit before the end of the third quarter, making it a 3-2 game with just 22 seconds remaining in the frame. Sophomore Rebecca Lane resumed the scoring for LVC with a shot that got past Alvernia's goalkeeper, courtesy of an assist by Ward. The Dutchmen then put another tally on the board with 3:54 left in the game, tying it at 3-3. Coming off a penalty corner, senior Emily Kline came through with a clutch goal to tie the contest, after an assist by sophomore Gracie Johnson

The Golden Wolves responded with 1:52 to play in the game, taking a 4-3 advantage on a goal by Kathryn Palmer. This held as the final score, as neither program found the back of the cage during the remainder of the game. 

Inside the Box Score:
  • Ward recorded her third goal of the campaign, while assisting Lane's goal in the third quarter. 
  • Lane scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
  • Kline found the back of the cage for the third time this year.
  • Long was credited with the assist on Ward's goal. 
  • Johnson assisted Kline's goal in the fourth quarter.
  • Lebanon Valley out-shot Alvernia 17 to eight.
  • The Flying Dutchmen had 15 penalty corners while the Golden Wolves had six.

The Flying Dutchmen will return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday, as the program will host Juniata College at Arnold Field.
