ANNVILLE, Pa. – A pair of goals in the fourth quarter by senior
Alana Antonello and sophomore
Gracie Johnson propelled the Lebanon Valley College field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Juniata College on Tuesday at Arnold Field.
Lebanon Valley (7-4) and Juniata (4-7, 1-2 Landmark) battled on the defensive end through the first three quarters of the contest, as a tally wasn't put on the scoreboard until the fourth frame. LVC held the opposition to just three shots through the first three quarters. The Dutchmen then broke the offensive silence with two clutch goals in the fourth to secure the win.
Defense was the story of the first half, as both programs managed to stifle the opposition's scoring chances. Lebanon Valley limited Juniata to just one shot in the first quarter, which was saved by sophomore goalkeeper
Lauren Jancsarics with 2:03 left in the opening frame. The Dutchmen attempted three shots on goal and four total shots during the first 15 minutes. The teams then prevented each other from taking a single shot during the second quarter of play, prompting the game to enter halftime at a 0-0 tie.
The squads continued to play solid defense in the third quarter, as LVC took just three shots while Juniata only registered two attempts. The Flying Dutchmen opened the scoring with 11:12 remaining in the fourth quarter, taking a 1-0 lead over the Eagles. Antonello registered the first goal of the night by sending a clutch shot into the back-left corner of the cage.
Lebanon Valley added an insurance goal with just 2:56 left in the game, extending its advantage to 2-0 against Juniata. Johnson put the squad up by two with a shot to the back of the cage, following an assist by junior forward
Lexi Ward. This would hold as the final score, as neither team put a point on the board during the remaining minutes.
