Berkheimer Scores Two Goals in Victory Over Alvernia

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– Junior midfielder Darrian Berkheimer netted a pair of goals during the Lebanon Valley College women's soccer team's 4-0 victory over Alvernia University on Wednesday at Herbert Field. 

Lebanon Valley (2-2-2) defeated Alvernia (1-7-1) behind a big second half, in which the team scored each of its four goals. Defense was the story of the opening stanza, as the game was scoreless going into halftime. LVC's offense came alive during the last 45 minutes, posting its highest scoring total of the season. Berkheimer's two goals helped lead the way, while three other players contributed to points for the program.

Both programs delivered strong defensive performances in the first half, keeping the opposing squad away from the net. The Flying Dutchmen held the Golden Wolves to just six total shots. Alvernia also attempted a pair of shots on goal in the opening stanza, both of which were saved by senior goalkeeper Jocelyn Umana

Lebanon Valley was aggressive offensively during the first, taking a total of 11 shots and seven shots on goal. Berkheimer attempted two shots on goal within the first four minutes of the contest and took four total shots in the half. The programs were tied at 0-0 as the game entered halftime.  

The Dutchmen opened the scoring 70:16 into the game, taking a 1-0 lead over the Golden Wolves. Berkheimer got the squad on the scoreboard by sending a penalty kick shot past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Lebanon Valley added another tally just 4:08 later, extending its advantage to 2-0. First-year forward Delaynie Reyes kicked the ball by the diving attempt of Alvernia's goalkeeper, following an assist by first-year forward Abrielle Miller.

LVC kept its offense rolling as the second half progressed, taking a 3-0 lead 5:05 later. Miller added a goal of her own to put the program ahead by three, finding the lower-right corner of the net on an unassisted shot. The Flying Dutchmen capped off the scoring with 4:12 remaining in the contest, making it a 4-0 ballgame. Berkheimer tacked on an insurance point with her second goal of the afternoon, sending a shot into the lower-left corner of the net. The final goal of the game was assisted by sophomore Alison Sepkovic. Lebanon Valley held Alvernia to just one shot during the remaining minutes, providing the home squad with the shutout victory. 

Inside the Box Score:
  • The Flying Dutchmen picked up their second shutout win of the year. This also marks the third time the squad has blanked an opponent this fall.
  • LVC's four goals marks the team's highest scoring total this season.
  • Berkheimer scored her first two goals of the campaign.
  • Reyes recorded her third goal of the year. 
  • Miller found the net for the third time this season, while also dishing out an assist.
  • Sepkovic was credited with the assist on Berkheimer's second goal. 
  • Lebanon Valley out-shot Alvernia 26 to 10.
  • Umana saved all three of the Golden Wolves' shots on goal.

Lebanon Valley's next matchup is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, as the program will travel to take on No. 17 Misericordia University at Mangelsdorf Field in Dallas, Pa.
