Long Stroke Gives Dutchmen Thrilling Overtime Victory At Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Sorrell Long had a big penalty stroke goal in overtime to give the Lebanon Valley field hockey team a huge 2-1 victory over Montclair State University on Friday evening in Montclair.

The Dutchmen were the aggressor for most of the match and out shot the Red Hawks 6-1 in the first 15 minutes of play. The pressure got to the Red Hawks as Rebecca Lane scored knocked in the first goal of the game in the 11th minute off a scum in front of the cage following a penalty corner. Gracie Johnson was credited with the assist after her shot was blocked inside the circle. Lane calmly collected the rebound and put it inside the back of the cage for her team-leading fifth of the year and ninth of her career.

The Dutchmen continued the offensive pressure and held a 1-0 lead into the quarter break. Montclair State was able to tie the game up in the 17th minute as Kylie Compton scored her second goal of the season off an assist by Sadie Eichlin. Compton knocked in the rebound shot after a Lauren Jancsaris save on the penalty corner shot. Jancsarics made a big save in the 24th minute as she denied a Compton shot off the second Red Hawk corner of the game.

The Dutchmen fought valiantly to get the go-ahead goal as Emily Kline and Lexi Ward recorded shots early in the third quarter. Lane had her shot saved in the third period as LVC and Montclair State entered the final 15 minutes tied at one. The game remained a defensive battle until Long ended things with a penalty stoke goal in the 72nd minute for the Dutchmen. Jancsarics came up big with two saves in the first overtime period.
