Abrielle Miller netted the game-winning goal in the Lebanon Valley College women's soccer team's 1-0 victory over Ursinus College on Wednesday at Herbert Field.
The Flying Dutchmen (1-1-1) showcased stellar defense during their first victory, blanking the Bears (3-2-0) despite the squad taking 11 shots in the contest. Senior goalkeeper
Jocelyn Umana played a key role for LVC, saving each of the opposition's five shots on goal. Miller came through with a clutch goal in the second half, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Both programs were dominant on the defensive end in the first half, limiting scoring chances through the first 45 minutes. Lebanon Valley kept Ursinus in check by holding the Bears to two total shots and one shot on goal during the half. The Dutchmen attempted to create offensive opportunities, taking four shots on goal in the stanza. Ultimately, the game was tied at 0-0 entering halftime.
The teams continued to battle defensively at the beginning of the second half, keeping each other off the board for the first 12:08 of the second. Lebanon Valley found the net 57:08 into the game, taking a 1-0 lead over Ursinus. Miller sent a shot past the goalkeeper and into the lower-right corner of the net, courtesy of an assist by senior forward
Sierra Young.
The Bears then attempted to even the score during the last 32:52, taking a total of eight shots after Miller's goal. Umana made four saves during this stretch of the game, maintaining the Dutchmen's one-goal advantage. Lebanon Valley's strong defensive performance in the second half helped secure the win.
