ANNVILLE, Pa. – Junior forward
Aaron Weitzel netted a goal and recorded an assist in the Lebanon Valley College men's soccer team's 3-0 victory over Gettysburg College on Tuesday at Herbert Field.
Lebanon Valley (4-1-0) delivered a balanced effort against Gettysburg (1-2-0), as the team received contributions from several players on both sides of the ball. The Dutchmen posted their fourth shutout of the year behind a five-save performance from senior goalkeeper
Dalton Fitterling. Offensively, Weitzel and three other players recorded points for LVC during the win.
The Dutchmen opened the scoring on Tuesday, taking a 1-0 lead over the Bullets just 17:47 into the first half. Sophomore forward
Nathan Prex got the team on the board by sending a shot past the diving attempt of the Bullets' goalkeeper and into the left corner of the net. LVC's first goal of the afternoon was assisted by graduate student
Lucas Strange.
Lebanon Valley added another goal 12:05 later, extending its advantage to 2-0. Graduate student forward
Matthew Weinstock-Collins snuck a shot past the goalkeeper and into the lower-left corner of the net, notching his first goal of the campaign. Weitzel was credited with the assist on the goal.
The defense for the Dutchmen was equally as impressive during the first half, as the program held the opposition to just two shots during the first 45 minutes of the contest. Only one of the Bullets' two shots during the stanza was on goal. LVC took a 2-0 lead over Gettysburg into halftime.
Scoring was limited during the majority of the second half, as Lebanon Valley held a two-goal advantage until there was just 10:08 remaining in the game. The Bullets became more active offensively in the second, as the team took nine shots and four shots on goal in the final 45 minutes.
The Flying Dutchmen tacked on an insurance point 79:52 into the game, making it a 3-0 contest. After drawing a penalty, Weitzel sent a penalty kick shot into the back of the net, marking his second goal in as many games. This would stand as the final score, as neither team got on the scoreboard during the final 10-plus minutes.
