GENEVA, N.Y. – Lexi Ward scored her first goal of the season and
Lauren Jancsarics made a season-high nine saves as the Lebanon Valley field hockey team fought valiantly in a tough 3-1 defeat at 20th-ranked William Smith College on the second day of the William Smith Classic.
The Herons (3-2) scored twice in the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead. The Dutchmen (2-3) fought back and nearly cut the lead in half as
Jenna Angstadt had her shot saved off a penalty corner in the first couple minutes of the second quarter.
Gracie Johnson's rebound attempt just sailed wide of the cage. The Dutchmen defense held the Herons to just one total shot in the quarter.
LVC cut the lead down to 2-1 in the 40th minute as Ward received a pass from
Claire Weidenhammer and sent a shot just inside the left post for her first goal of the season. The Dutchmen nearly tied the game up 90 seconds later when a shot from Weidenhammer was cleared away by a Heron defender for a defensive save. William Smith was able to increase their lead to 3-1 with a goal in the 43rd minute. The Herons were able to keep the Dutchmen off the scoreboard the rest of the way to earn the victory on their home turf.
