Hughes Four Goals Power Dutchmen to Win at Wilkes

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Collin Hughes scored the first two goals of the game and finished with four goals to propel the Lebanon Valley men's lacrosse team to a 12-5 victory at Wilkes University on Wednesday afternoon in the team's final non-conference game of the year.
 
After Hughes scored his first two goal to give the Dutchmen (6-3) the lead, Wilkes (2-5) scored with 15 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 2-1 after the first quarter. LVC scored five unanswered goals in the second to take a 7-2 halftime advantage. Bollinger had three of the five goals in the quarter while Hughes and Alex Kiviniemi scored a goal each.
 
Kiviniemi extended the goal-streak with his second of the game a little over midway through the third quarter. Trey Ralston added a goal to give the Dutchmen a 9-1 advantage. Wilkes scored three straight goals to cut the deficit to 9-4 with 12:46 left in the fourth. Hughes and Sam Long scored to bring the advantage back up to seven. The Colonels scored with 1:11 to play before Sean Poole ended the game with a goal in the final 20 seconds.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Hughes tied his season-high with four goals on eight shots and five shots on goal. He has scored four goals three times this year.
  • Bollinger scored on all three shots he put on goal in the second quarter for his sixth hat trick of the season.
  • Carson Frey had three assists to give him 26 on the season and a team-leading 40 points.
  • Kiviniemi led the team with nine shots and scored two goals with four shots on goal.
  • Gavin Porter was excellent on faceoffs winning 14 of 18 and picked up a team-high seven ground balls.
  • Zach Wanous had four caused turnovers and seven ground balls to pace the strong defensive effort.
  • Kellen Markley made 12 saves and faced 17 shots.
  • The Dutchmen allowed a season-low five goals and had a season-high 39 ground balls.
  • LVC was successful on 22 of 23 clear attempts while Wilkes was 18-26 on clears.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will open conference play next Wednesday at Widener University. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Chester.
