Kiviniemi Scores Six Goals Against Misericordia

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley men's lacrosse senior Alex Kiviniemi equaled his career-high with six goals in a tough 12-11 defeat to visiting Misericordia University on Saturday afternoon at Arnold Field.
 
Carson Frey scored a little over a minute into the game off an assist from Jack Kapcsos to put the Dutchmen (5-3) up 1-0. Misericordia (3-3) responded with three of the next four goals to take a 3-2 lead. Kiviniemi tallied his first goal of the game off an assist from Trey Ralston for LVC. The teams traded goals the rest of the quarter and Misericordia took a 4-3 lead with a goal with five seconds left. Kiviniemi and Jake Bollinger gave the Dutchmen a 6-4 lead with the first three goals of the second. Kiviniemi completed his hat trick to begin the quarter and then scored with 7:53 to go. The Cougars cut the lead to 6-5 before Frey and Kiviniemi scored back-to-back goals to make it 8-5. Misericordia scored before the half was over to cut the advantage to 8-6 at the break.
 
The Cougars scored the first three goals of the second half to take a 9-8 lead. Ralston stopped the run with a goal off a nice pass from Frey to tie the game going into the fourth quarter. Kiviniemi put the Dutchmen on top with his sixth goal of the game in the first minute of the fourth. Jacob Mrose gave the Dutchmen a two-goal lead with 10:57 on the clock. The Cougars scored two goals within the next two minutes to even things back up. The teams fought up-and-down the field until Misericordia was able to score the game-winner with 2:14 left.

  • Kiviniemi scored six goals for the second consecutive game on 13 shots. He also picked up three ground balls.
  • Frey had three points on two goals and an assist. He has scored and recorded at least one assist in all eight games this season.
  • Kapcsos had a career-high three assists.
  • Ralston added a goal and an assist while Bollinger and Mrose scored a goal each.
  • Colin Hughes led the team with six ground balls while Gavin Porter won 13 faceoffs and had five ground balls.
  • Kellen Markley made 11 saves.
  • LVC had a season-low 11 turnovers and were 14-16 on clear attempts.
  • The Dutchmen outshot the Cougars 48-47 and had a 29-23 advantage in shots on goal.

Lebanon Valley will close out non-conference play on Wednesday with another trip up I-81 to face Wilkes University. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
