ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley men's lacrosse team outscored visiting Moravian University 11-2 in the second half to defeat the Greyhounds 20-13 in the team's home opener at Arnold Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Moravian scored twice in the first five minutes to take the early lead. The Dutchmen got on the board as
Alex Kiviniemi found
Trey Ralston streaking for a goal. The teams would trade goals with
Easley Pierson and
Carson Frey finding the back of the net for the Dutchmen making it 5-3 with 5:39 to go in the quarter. LVC scored fourth straight to end the quarter with a 7-5 lead.
Colin Hughes started the run and was followed by
Jake Bollinger twice and
Jacob Mrose. Moravian responded with a strong second quarter outscoring the Dutchmen 6-2 to take a 11-9 lead into the break. Kiviniemi scored both goals in the quarter for LVC.
The second half began with a pair of Kiviniemi goals to tie the game up. The Greyhounds retook the lead at 12-11 with 7:32 remaining in the third but that would be the last time Moravian would score until the final minute of the game. The Dutchmen got goals from Hughes and Bollinger to take a 13-12 lead into the fourth quarter. They continued the run into the fourth as
Jack Kapcsos started the fourth with a goal. Kiviniemi, Hughes,
Carson Frey, and Bollinger all scored for the Dutchmen giving them a 20-12 lead. Moravian was able to cut it to 20-13 with a goal in the final minute.
Inside the Box Score
- Kiviniemi had a career-high six goals and two assists for eight points. The senior needed just 11 shots and seven shots on goal.
- Frey also had a great game with seven points on two goals and a career-high five assists.
- Bollinger and Hughes both finished with four goals. Bollinger added an assist to his point total.
- Ralston finished with three points on one goal and two assists.
- Four Dutchmen had a point in the game as Kapcsos, Pierson, and Mrose scored a goal and Nick Huff recorded his first career assist.
- Sam Long and Ben Weathersby led the team with four ground balls each.
- Kellen Markley made 15 saves to pick up his first career win in goal.
- The 20 goals in a game are the most for the Dutchmen since a 24-7 win at LaRoche on March 4, 2015. It is also the most goals scored in a home opener in program history.
