Mulcahy Tallies Fifth Career Goal at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley junior Brenna Mulcahy scored her fifth career goal for the women's ice hockey team on Friday evening in a 6-1 defeat to host Wilkes University at the Toyota SportsPlex.
 
The Dutchmen won the opening faceoff and took the puck straight inside the blue line. Erin Yorke had her first shot blocked and then her rebound attempt was saved by the Wilkes goaltender. The Colonels responded with five shots over the next four minutes putting two on goal and hitting the pipe on another. Victoria Scurto and Yorke blocked the other two shots. LVC battled back and Alexa Spiers and Mulcahy had shots saved. The teams battled up and down the ice the rest of the period with neither team able to score. LVC's best chance came in the 12th minute as Anna Dale put two shots on goal in the first 30 seconds and then Cheyenne Wilk had a shot saved.
 
Wilkes came out of the intermission and put seven shots on goal in the first nine minutes of play. Mia Frisoni stopped all nine shots while Yorke and Chelly Wolfe blocked two more shots. The Colonels scored four goals in a span of seven minutes from 9:26 to 16:40 to take a 4-0 lead. The Dutchmen were able to cut into the advantage at 17:33 as Mulcahy snuck the puck over the right shoulder of the Wilkes goalie and into the back of the net on a breakaway. Yorke passed the puck up to Mulcahy for the assist on the play. The Colonels were able to score in the final 10 seconds of the period on a rebound attempt to make it 5-1 headed into the third.
 
The teams each had penalties early in the third period which were all successfully killed off. The Colonels added to their lead with an even strength goal at 3:37. LVC fought valiantly to cut into the advantage as Katie Pounder and Madelynn Debelis had shots saved. The Dutchmen had two power play opportunities back-to-back from 11:19 to 14:18 in the period and were able to put two shots on goal by Jess Dawe and Alexis Oukes during the first opportunity and then had shots by Oukes and Yorke blocked during the second opportunity. The Colonels held the Dutchmen off the board the rest of the way to win the weekend opener.

  • Frisoni stopped 20 of 24 shots she faced.
  • Jorja Fisher made 16 saves in relief.

The Dutchmen will host the Colonels at Hersheypark Arena tomorrow afternoon. The opening puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m.
