PITTSTON, Pa. – Victoria Scurto scored her first goal of the season for the Lebanon Valley women's ice hockey team in a tough 2-1 defeat to King's College on Saturday afternoon at the Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.
The Monarchs came out of the gates firing at the net putting five shots on goal in the first four minutes of action compared to one shot for the Dutchmen by
Mallory Burdick.
Lacy Bigelow stood tall in goal and kept all five shots out of the net. LVC put pressure on the KC goalie as
Brenna Mulcahy,
Maeghan Howson, and Scurto had shots saved over the next five minutes of play. LVC had a great opportunity to score with just over four minutes left in the period as
Erin Yorke had her shot blocked,
Jess Dawe had her shot saved, and then
Anna Dale had her rebound attempt also saved by the KC goaltender. The Dutchmen kept the pressure on the Monarch defense with a pair of shots on goal by Howson and
Norah McCauliffe that were saved. King's was able to take a 1-0 lead at 18:32 as they knocked in a rebound off a Bigelow save.
King's used the momentum to control possession for the first five minutes of the second period holding the Dutchmen without a shot or faceoff win after the opening faceoff of the period. LVC started to build back some momentum as Scurto and
Ava Waugaman sent shots wide. Scurto picked up the loose puck off Waugaman's shot and lit the lamp to tie the game up at one. The Dutchmen killed off a penalty with just one shot on goal allowed during the two-minute kill while Howson was able to get a shot off right before the teams returned to even strength. Scurto and
Tiffany Anderson had shots on goal over the next couple minutes before the Dutchmen were called for another penalty. King's was able to retake the lead with a power play goal at 13:31 off another rebounded shot following a Bigelow save. The Dutchmen fought hard to even the game back up but shots by Yorke, Mulcahy, Dale, and Oukes were saved while
Kiley McCooey had her shot blocked over the last six minutes of the period.
The Dutchmen dominated possession for the third period and outshot the Monarchs 15-5 in the period but were unable to get the game-tying goal. Waugaman and Dale had shots in the first couple of minutes while Mulcahy fired off a shot that was gloved at 3:58. The Dutchmen were rewarded with their first power play opportunity of the weekend with just under nine minutes left. Dale had a shot go wide and then Anderson had her shot saved before the penalty expired.
Katie Pounder and Yorke had shots saved before Dale's attempt with one minute left was stopped. Yorke and Anderson put shots on goal in the final minute with LVC playing with an empty net but the Monarchs were able to hold on for the victory.
