Dutchmen Dethrone Monarchs on Howson Overtime Goal

PITTSTON, Pa. – Maeghan Howson scored 46 seconds into overtime to give the Lebanon Valley women's ice hockey team a 1-0 victory at King's College on Friday evening in the series opener between the squads at Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.

The Dutchmen (3-4-0, 2-3-0 UCHC, 2-1-0 MAC) earned an important three points with the overtime victory over the Monarchs (1-6-0, 0-5-0 UCHC, 0-3-0 MAC). Howson took the first shot of the game just 30 seconds in, but it went wide of the goal. The Dutchmen put a lot of pressure on the Monarch defense and controlled the puck throughout most of the opening period. Ava Waugaman had a shot blocked, and then Alexis Oukes and Tiffany Anderson had back-to-back shots saved. Brenna Mulcahy and Oukes had shots saved by the King's goalie before Oukes had a shot blocked with seven minutes to go in the period. At the other end of the ice LVC did an excellent job limiting shots and Mia Frisoni was a wall in net stopping anything that got through the defense. LVC held a 6-4 shot on goal advantage after the first 20 minutes but also had four shots blocked in the period.

LVC came out as the aggressors once again in the second period putting immediate pressure on the netminder. Kaia Carlson had a shot saved in the third minute while Howson's shot in the fifth minute was also knocked away from goal. Norah McCauliffe had a great look at the goal early in the seventh minute of the period, but her shots was kicked away by Hayley Packer in goal. The Monarchs were awarded the first power play of the game at the seven-minute mark. Frisoni stopped three shots during the successful two-minute penalty kill. The Dutchmen didn't allow a single shot the rest of the period while putting eight shots on goal during the final nine minutes. Alexa Spiers had three of the shots followed by shots from Mulcahy and Yorke. Mallory Burdick and Howson also had shots on goal during the period. Anna Dale and Grace Mayer had shots blocked in the final minutes of the period.

The offensive attack continued into the third period as Mayer had another shot blocked in the first minute and then Yorke had a shot saved. Anderson, Waugaman, and Howson all had shots on goal saved before King's was able to take their first shot of the period at 6:36 which was blocked by Howson. The rebound shot was saved by Frisoni which was the third-to-last shot she would see on the night. Wugaman nearly gave the Dutchmen the lead at the eight-minute mark when her shot hit the pipe. Mayer, Anderson, Spiers, and Jess Dawe all had shots saved prior to the Dutchmen being called for their second penalty of the game at 13:13. Anderson blocked the only shot King's was able to get off during another successful penalty kill as the teams went into the final five minutes still scoreless. Anderson and Mulcahy had shots saved before Frisoni was needed to make a save in the final minute.

The Dutchmen won the opening faceoff of overtime, but King's was able to get the puck and put a shot on goal at the 30 second mark. Yorke grabbed the loose puck along the boards in front of King's bench and got the puck to Howson who went one-one with a King's defender. Howson beat the defender and snuck the puck into the right corner of the net for her first career goal.
