HERSHEY, Pa. – Sophomore
Mallory Burdick scored her first goal of the season on Saturday night, as the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team dropped a 3-1 game to Stevenson University at Hersheypark Arena.
Lebanon Valley (2-4-0, 1-3-0 UCHC, 1-1-0 MAC) delivered a valiant effort against Stevenson (1-5-0, 1-3-0 UCHC, 1-1-0 MAC), battling on both sides of the ice until the final minute. The programs went back and forth defensively in a scoreless first period before the Mustangs scored twice in the second to go ahead. The Flying Dutchmen battled back with a goal in the third frame, but Stevenson then added another tally.
The programs dominated defensively in the first period, as neither squad found the net during the first 20 minutes of the contest. The Dutchmen were aggressive on the offensive end early, taking 14 shots on goal during the period. Senior
Jess Dawe helped the team create some of these scoring chances, sending three shots toward the net in the first. First-year goaltender
Jorja Fisher also helped limit the opposition, saving all seven shots she faced.
Stevenson opened the scoring 9:03 into the second period, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Maggie Dean. The Mustangs added another point 16:18 into the frame, extending their advantage to 2-0 on a goal by Carleigh Barwick. Lebanon Valley also generated chances to get on the board, as six different players attempted shots on goal during the period. Sophomore
Alexa Spiers and junior
Brenna Mulcahy each took shots on goal within a span of four seconds during the 18
th minute.
The Flying Dutchmen then got on the board 10:48 into the third period, trimming their deficit to 2-1 against the Mustangs. Burdick sent a shot past the goaltender, following assists by Dawe and junior
Erin Yorke. Stevenson then answered 2:39 later, making it a 3-1 contest on a goal by Hannah Labbe. Lebanon Valley continued to battle offensively in the final frame, as the squad took 18 shots on goal in the third. Dawe took three more shots for LVC during the last 20 minutes. Ultimately, neither team scored during the remainder of the game.
