ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College women's soccer team picked up its first win as a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom on Saturday, as the program defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Campus 2-0 at Herbert Field.
Lebanon Valley (3-4-2, 1-1 MAC Freedom) defeated FDU-Florham (8-5-1, 0-2-0 MAC Freedom) behind solid performances on both sides of the ball. The Flying Dutchmen were stellar defensively, shutting out the Devils while limiting the squad to six shots on goal. LVC also found the net once in each half, which proved to be the difference in the contest. The teams competed through rain for much of the first half, but the weather then cleared up for the remainder of the contest.
The programs were productive on defense early, keeping the game scoreless for over 28 minutes. Senior goalkeeper
Jocelyn Umana made three saves within the first 13:31, as each of FDU-Florham's shots during this stretch were on goal. The Dutchmen took their first shot of the day 15:27 into the game, as senior forward
Sierra Young recorded an attempt. The team continued to be more aggressive offensively over the next 7:15, taking five shots during this span.
The Flying Dutchmen opened the scoring 28:46 into the first half, taking a 1-0 lead over the Devils. First-year forward
Abrielle Miller sent a shot past the diving attempt of the goalkeeper and into the upper-right corner of the net. The first goal of the afternoon was assisted by junior midfielder
Darrian Berkheimer. LVC took this one-goal advantage into halftime.
Offensive opportunities were hard to come by at the beginning of the second half as well, as the score remained 1-0 in favor of LVC for 28:32 into the stanza. Lebanon Valley put another point on the board 73:32 into the game, extending its lead to 2-0 against FDU-Florham. Young put the team up by two by finding the lower-left corner of the net, courtesy of another assist by Berkheimer.
The Devils attempted to get back into the game after facing the two-point deficit, taking a total of four shots during the final 16:28 of the contest. Ultimately, Lebanon Valley's defense held the opposition in check during this stretch to secure the win.
