Penner Posts 13 Kills in Volleyball’s Sweep of Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. ­­– Sophomore Mattea Penner led the Lebanon Valley College volleyball team with 13 kills during its 3-0 victory over Delaware Valley University on Wednesday at James Work Gymnasium.

Lebanon Valley (13-8, 4-1 MAC Freedom) swept Delaware Valley (9-11, 1-4 MAC Freedom) behind contributions from several players. The Flying Dutchmen took the three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-15. The win marks the fourth time LVC has swept an opponent this season. 

The Flying Dutchmen and Aggies battled early in the first set, trading the lead on six occasions. The programs went back-and-forth until the set was even at 16-16, when Lebanon Valley then delivered seven consecutive points to take a commanding 23-16 advantage. This dominant stretch by LVC included two kills by Penner, a kill by first-year Libby Lindau, an ace by junior Robyn Stepler, two attack errors and a bad set. Delaware Valley responded with two straight points, but the Dutchmen then registered a pair of points to close out the set. LVC secured the first set 25-18 with a kill by Penner and an attack error. 

The Aggies got their offense rolling early in set two, making it 12-5 in their favor. The Flying Dutchmen then responded with a 10-3 stretch, tying the set at 15-15. Lebanon Valley evened the score with a run that included three kills by first-year Teaguen Reynolds, two kills by senior Taylor McInerney, an ace by junior Abigail Souder and four attack errors. The squads then exchanged points until the score advanced to 18-18. LVC followed this with six points in a row, taking a 24-18 lead in the set. The program went ahead on a stretch with three kills by McInerney, two attack errors and a bad set. Lebanon Valley wrapped up the set with another kill by McInerney, winning it 25-19 while taking a 2-0 advantage in the match. 

The Dutchmen continued to produce offensively in the third set, taking control early. The Aggies jumped out to a 5-2 advantage, but LVC answered back with five straight points to go ahead 7-5. Lebanon Valley took the lead on a stretch that included a kill and an ace by Stepler, a kill by Penner, a kill by Lindau and an attack error. The score then advanced to 8-7 LVC, before the program delivered six consecutive points to take a 14-7 advantage. The Dutchmen took a commanding lead after two kills by McInerney, a kill and an ace by senior Kasey Thomas and a pair of attack errors. The teams then swapped points until Lebanon Valley was up 22-15. The Flying Dutchmen followed this by securing the 25-15 set victory and the 3-0 match win with an attack error and two kills by McInerney.

  • Lebanon Valley logged its fourth sweep in a match this year. The team has won its last two contests. 
  • Penner led the Flying Dutchmen with 13 kills.
  • McInerney recorded 12 kills during the match.
  • Stepler led the program with 21 assists and a pair of aces. 
  • Reynolds tallied the most blocks on the team, registering three. The first-year also had four kills in the match.
  • Thomas led the squad with 13 digs. 
Up Next
Lebanon Valley will return to action at 11 a.m. Saturday, as the squad will host Elizabethtown College at Sorrentino Gymnasium. Later that day at 3 p.m., the program will take on Rowan University.
