Johnson Scores Double Overtime Game-Winner at Misericordia

DALLAS, Pa. – Gracie Johnson gave Lebanon Valley field hockey head coach Amber Corcoran '09 her 100th career victory as a head coach with a goal in the 72nd minute in a thrilling 2-1 double overtime win at Misericordia University on Wednesday evening.

The Dutchmen (9-6, 2-2 MAC Freedom) picked up a very important conference road victory over the Cougars (3-10, 1-3 MAC Freedom) on a brisk evening on Mangelsdorf Field in Dallas. LVC put pressure on Misericordia from the opening whistle as Claire Weidenhammer had her shot sail just wide of the cage in the third minute. Alana Antonello gave the Dutchmen the lead in the sixth minute as she found the back of the cage off a beautiful pass from Weidenhammer. Lebanon Valley kept pushing as Emily Kline and Antonello had shots saved off back-to-back penalty corners. Misericordia was able to keep the score at 1-0 after the defense blocked an Abby Rodenberger shot off a penalty corner in the final minute of the quarter.

Misericordia came out strong to begin the second quarter with a pair of shots following the team's first penalty corner attempt in the 18th minute. Neither shot was on goal as the Dutchmen defense blocked the first attempt and the second attempt went wide. Those were the only two shots of the quarter as the teams battled up and down the field with strong defense.

LVC nearly scored to begin the second half as Lexi Ward got a shot past the keeper, but a Cougar defender was there to knock the ball away for a defensive save. Misericordia was able to tie the game up in the 44th minute off a redirection of a pass into the circle. The Dutchmen pressed for the go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter and dominated the final 10 minutes of play. Weidenhammer got behind the defense after a great pass from the defensive end. She found herself on a one-on-one with the keeper, but Sarah Bogina was able to come up with a big save. Ward had a great opportunity to score in the 55th minute as her first attempt at goal was blocked and then her rebound shot was saved. Antonello had her clean look at the cage in the final minute of regulation knocked away before Sorrell Long's blast off a corner was saved as well.

The Dutchmen worked the ball around in the opening minutes of the first overtime period. LVC had a few great opportunities to score in the first overtime, but each shot was saved by Bogina. Johnson had the first shot in the extra period and Antonello added three shots on goal that were kept out of the back of the cage. Lebanon Valley was able to break through in the second minute of the second overtime period as Johnson knocked the ball over the line in front of the cage following a save of a Ward shot.
