Johnson Scores Twice in Field Hockey's Win Over FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. ­­– Sophomore Gracie Johnson scored two goals in the Lebanon Valley College field hockey team's 3-2 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Campus on Friday night at Robert T. Shields Field. 

Lebanon Valley (10-6, 3-2 MAC Freedom) defeated FDU-Florham (5-10, 1-4 MAC Freedom) with key offensive performances from several players. The Flying Dutchmen struck first during the opening quarter, but the Devils tied things up before the end of the first half. LVC then added goals in each of the final two frames, which proved to be the difference in the contest.

The Dutchmen were dominant on the defensive end during the first quarter, keeping the Devils from taking a shot in the frame. The program was also aggressive offensively in the first, taking five shots with four attempts on goal. Lebanon Valley got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead over FDU-Florham 4:52 into the game. Johnson opened the scoring for LVC by sending a shot to the back of the cage, shortly after taking a penalty corner. Johnson's seventh goal of the season was assisted by senior Emily Kline

The Devils became more aggressive on offense in the second quarter, registering their first three shot attempts during this stretch. FDU-Florham tied things up with 2:42 remaining in the frame, making it a 1-1 contest on a goal by Dominique Rodriguez. Neither team found the back of the cage in the final minutes of the half, prompting the squads to enter halftime in a 1-1 tie. 

Lebanon Valley showcased more stellar defense when the second half began, maintaining the stalemate by preventing the opposition from taking a shot in the third quarter. The Flying Dutchmen broke the tie with 2:59 to go in the frame, taking a 2-1 advantage. Coming off a penalty corner, Johnson delivered the go-ahead goal on a shot that went into the back-left of the cage. Senior Sorrell Long was credited with the assist on Johnson's second goal of the night. 

The Dutchmen then tacked on an insurance point with 9:36 left in the fourth quarter, extending its lead to 3-1 against the Devils. Coming off another penalty corner, sophomore Rebecca Lane sent a shot into the right side of the cage to give the squad a two-goal advantage. FDU-Florham responded with a goal by Morgan Keller at the end of the contest, making it a 3-2 game in favor of the Flying Dutchmen. However, there was no time remaining on the clock after the point was scored, providing LVC with victory. 

Inside the Box Score:
  • Lebanon Valley has won back-to-back games. 
  • Johnson found the back of the cage twice during the contest, bringing her season total to eight goals.  
  • Lane logged her eighth goal of the season. She is now tied with Johnson for the team-lead in goals.  
  • Kline and Long both recorded assists for LVC.
  • The Flying Dutchmen out-shot the Devils 11 to five. The program also had 10 shots on goal in the game. 
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Jancsarics made three saves during the win.

Lebanon Valley will return to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday, as the program will host Arcadia University at Arnold Field.
