ANNVILLE, Pa. – First-year
Claire Weidenhammer scored a goal for the Lebanon Valley College field hockey team on Homecoming Sunday, as the team dropped a close 2-1 contest against Stevens Institute of Technology at Arnold Field.
Lebanon Valley (8-6, 1-2 MAC Freedom) and Stevens (11-2, 3-0 MAC Freedom) went back-and-forth all afternoon in a defensive battle. The Dutchmen found the cage first in this game, but the Ducks later tied things up in the second quarter. The squads battled on the defensive end in the second half, but a goal in the fourth quarter by Stevens proved to be the difference in the contest.
The first quarter of this game was dominated by defense, as neither team got on the scoreboard. Lebanon Valley's defense limited Stevens to four total shots during the opening frame. Sophomore goalkeeper
Lauren Jancsarics saved both shots that came her way during the first.
The Flying Dutchmen opened the scoring with 6:27 remaining in the second quarter, taking a 1-0 lead over the Ducks. Weidenhammer got Lebanon Valley on the board by sending a shot to the back of the cage, following an assist by junior
Lexi Ward. Stevens then tied the game at 1-1 just 48 seconds later on a penalty stroke goal by Taylor Knox. The programs entered halftime with the score even.
Both teams delivered strong defensive performances in the third quarter, as neither squad put a tally on the board in the frame. The Dutchmen were stellar defensively during the frame, holding the Ducks to just one shot. This shot by Stevens came 1:49 into the quarter and was saved by senior
Madeline Reider.
Stevens resumed the scoring 1:43 into the fourth quarter, taking a 2-1 advantage on a goal by Lynda Farinfella. Lebanon Valley generated some offensive opportunities in the remaining minutes of the last frame, taking three shots during this span. Ultimately, neither team found the back of the cage during the final minutes, preserving the Ducks' lead.
