McInerney Records 25 Kills in Volleyball's Win Over Penn State Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, Pa.  Senior Taylor McInerney recorded 25 kills and first-year Lyla Arfanella tallied six aces in the Lebanon Valley College volleyball team's 3-1 victory over Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday night at the Capital Union Building.

Lebanon Valley (12-8, 3-1 MAC Freedom) battled Penn State Harrisburg (7-10, 0-1 United East) in four competitive sets, as the squad came away with the win. The Flying Dutchmen took the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-16, before the Lions won the third set 25-23. LVC then claimed set four 25-18 after a big comeback, picking up the 3-1 victory in the match.

The Dutchmen got their offense rolling early in the first set, as the program jumped out to an early 7-1 lead over the Lions. The team's early dominant stretch included two kills by McInerney, a kill each by first-year Teaguen Reynolds and junior Robyn Stepler, as well as an ace by junior Abigail Souder. Penn State Harrisburg responded with some offensive production later in the set, taking a 15-14 advantage. Lebanon Valley followed this with a 5-1 stretch to reclaim the lead, making it a 19-16 set. This run was partly the result of kills by sophomores Mattea Penner and Margaret Cole, along with an ace by Reynolds. The Lions continued to keep things close, narrowing the advantage of the Dutchmen to 23-21 late. LVC followed this with two straight points on a service error and a kill by McInerney, securing the 25-21 win in set one.

The Flying Dutchmen and the Lions went back-and-forth early in the second set, exchanging points until the score advanced to 12-9 in favor of Penn State Harrisburg. Lebanon Valley answered back with nine consecutive points, taking a commanding 18-12 lead. LVC went ahead on four kills by McInerney, two aces by Arfanella, a kill by first-year Libby Lindau, a service error and a ball handling error. The Dutchmen then capped off the set with a 7-4 stretch, winning it by a score of 25-16. The squad recorded its final two points of the set on a pair of aces by Lindau, providing LVC with a 2-0 lead in the match.

Lebanon Valley continued its offensive dominance at the start of the third set, taking a 4-0 advantage on a kill by McInerney, an ace by Stepler and two ball handling errors. The Dutchmen continued to put points of the board as the set progressed, extending its lead to 11-5. The program reached this six-point advantage after four consecutive points, resulting from a service error, a kill by McInerney, an ace by Lindau and a bad set. Penn State Harrisburg then battled back to go in front, making it a 14-12 set in the Lions favor. The teams went on to trade points until the squads were later tied up at 20-20. The Lions ultimately finished the set on a 5-3 run, taking the third by a score of 25-23.
