Field Hockey Downs Aggies for First MAC Freedom Win

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley field hockey team used a suffocating defense to shutout Delaware Valley University 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Lapinski Field in Doylestown for the first conference win of the season.

The Dutchmen (8-5, 1-1 MAC Freedom) put pressure on the Aggies (3-8, 0-2 MAC Freedom) early earning the first penalty corner of the game in the fourth minute. Alana Antonello had her shot blocked off the corner. Lexi Ward and Antonello had shots on goal saved by the DVU keeper as LVC pressed for the opening goal. The Aggies were able to earn a pair of penalty corners right around the 10-minute mark, but the Dutchmen defense came up strong and blocked the only shot that was able to be taken. LVC earned a penalty corner right before the quarter expired as Gracie Johnson inserted the ball to Emily Kline. Kline had her shot blocked and then Clair Weidenhammer knocked in the loose ball for the first goal of the game.

LVC kept the pressure on in the second quarter as Sarah Leidich and Abby Rodenberger had shots blocked within the first minute of play. Doylestown native Sorrell Long had her shot blocked off a penalty corner 1:15 into the period. Ward had a pair of shots saved in the 22nd and 26th minutes including a rocket from the middle of the circle that the Aggie keeper just managed to get a glove on to knock away. DVU blocked shots by Antonello and Rebecca Lane before Jenna Angstadt had her shot from the top of the circle saved. Antonello also had a shot saved as LVC went into the half leading 1-0.

Delaware Valley began the second half with an early corner and forced Lauren Jancsarics to make her first save of the game. LVC responded by driving right down the field and forcing a corner. Weidenhammer and Lane had shots blocked and then Ward had her shot knocked away by the goalkeeper on another penalty corner attempt. Lane had two shots saved as LVC fired shots at the cage looking for another goal. That goal came in the 42nd minute as Johnson knocked in a crossing pass from Kline.

The fourth quarter began with LVC taking back-to-back corners late in the 47th minute. The Dutchmen increased the lead to 3-0 as Long scored in her hometown off an assist by Antonello. The Dutchmen controlled possession throughout most of the final 10 minutes but only had a shot from Ward go wide.
