ANNVILLE, Pa. – Junior
Brendan Landry pitched a career-high four innings of relief and shut down the Widener offense allowing the Lebanon Valley College baseball team to make a comeback attempt in a tough 9-5 defeat to the Pride on Friday afternoon on McGill Field. The game was called at the beginning of the ninth inning due to a storm that was passing through the area.
Widener (12-13, 4-2 MAC Commonwealth) scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take the lead. Lebanon Valley (15-11, 3-3 MAC Commonwealth) responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead in half. The Pride scored one run in the second, two in the third, and two runs in the fourth during a light rain to extend their lead to 9-2. Nico Santoro single and a two-run home run to left off the bat of
Mike Bulgia. Landry entered the game in the fifth and shut down the Widener offense for four innings. The Dutchmen had their best chance to score in the eighth putting two on base but were unable to drive in any runs.
Inside the Box Score
- Landry retired the first seven batters he faced before the Pride recorded a hit. The junior struck out three batters, all in the eighth inning. He allowed just one hit with one walk while facing 14 batters.
- Bulgia had a big game at the plate with three hits including his fourth inning home run. He also knocked in a run in the first and then scored. Bulgia recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the year and third three-hit game. He also leads the team with seven multi-RBI games.
- Andrew Miles had two hits for the Dutchmen while Santoro had one hit, an RBI, and a run scored.
- Conor Smith singled home Bulgia in the first with a rocket through the left side on an 0-2 pitch.
- The Dutchmen hit the ball hard all afternoon, but the Widener defense made a few great plays in the field to take away hits and had a couple balls hit right at them.
Who's Next
Lebanon Valley will travel down to Frederick, Md. on Sunday for two important conference games against Hood College. Game one is scheduled for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
