ANNVILLE, Pa. – Riley Hevelow had a career day and
Daelyn Stabler recorded another double-double to lead the Lebanon Valley women's basketball team to a thrilling 55-49 victory over Hood College on Saturday afternoon inside Sorrentino Gymnasium.
The Dutchmen (5-4, 2-1 MAC Commonwealth) got off to a slow start offensively as Hood (3-6, 1-3 MAC Commonwealth) scored the first 12 points of the game over the first six minutes. Stabler put the Dutchmen on the board with a driving layup, a jumper in the paint, and a fastbreak layup for LVC's only three made field goals in the opening 10 minutes. The Blazers took a 18-7 lead into the second quarter after a made three right before the buzzer. That would be the only quarter that the Blazer outscored the Dutchmen. After battling back and forth over the first eight minutes of the second quarter,
Kate Fitzpatrick knocked down a three and then Hevelow hitting a running jumper in the paint to cut the deficit down to 28-20 going into halftime.
Fitzpatrick began the second half with her second three of the day, Stabler knocked down one of two free throws, and then Hevelow hit another jumper in the paint to make it a two-point game with 8:23 on the clock. Following a Hood bucket
Allison Bimmer hit a big three off an assist from Stabler to bring the Dutchmen within one at 32-31. Hood responded with a 8-3 run to close out the quarter. The Blazers started the fourth with two baskets sandwiched around a Stabler bucket. LVC scored the next six points to bring it back to a one-point game with 6:25 to go. The Dutchmen took their first lead of the game with 3:16 left as
Cristina Fernandez found Hevelow for a fastbreak layup to put the Dutchmen ahead 49-48. After a Blazer free throw tied the game, Stabler scored on a beautiful reverse layup and then picked off the inbound pass. Fitzpatrick made it a two-possession game with a jumper and then closed out the scoring with a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left.
