Fitzpatrick Scores Game-High 19 Points In Season Opener

DALLAS, Pa. – Junior Kate Fitzpatrick scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Lebanon Valley women's basketball team in the season opener on Tuesday evening at Misericordia University. The host Cougars used a big fourth quarter to defeat the Dutchmen 61-56 in a close game throughout.
 
The teams battled back and forth all night with 18 lead changes and five times the game was tied. Misericordia had the biggest lead of the opening quarter jumping out to a 10-5 advantage with 2:28 left. LVC went on. 6-0 run on an inside jumper from Christina Fernandez and a pair of layups by Riley Hevelow to take the lead. The Cougars scored a last second layup to go up 15-14 after one. The Dutchmen built their biggest lead of the first half on a Kyrsten Joseph three, and then three points from Fitzpatrick to hold a 25-19 advantage with 4:33 left. Misericordia closed the half on a 10-0 run to take a 29-24 lead into the half.
 
The Cougars took their biggest lead of the game at nine points following a three with 5:49 to go in the third quarter. The Dutchmen responded with a huge 16-2 run to take a 46-41 lead into the fourth quarter. Misericordia began the fourth with a pair of threes to retake the lead. The teams traded buckets over the next few minutes until two free throws by Samya Santiague gave the Dutchmen a 50-49 advantage with 6:21 left in the game. The Cougars scored the next 10 points of the game over a five-minute stretch to build a nine-point lead with under a minute left. Fitzpatrick knocked down a pair of threes in the final minute to cut into the lead.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Fitzpatrick had 19 points making four threes. She pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists.
  • Hevelow had a great collegiate debut scoring 13 points and pulling down eight boards. She also blocked two shots.
  • Daelyn Stabler had six points, three steals, and four rebounds.
  • Th Dutchmen shot 34.9 percent from the floor and knocked down nine three-pointers. LVC had 14 second chance points and 14 points in the paint.
What's Next
The Dutchmen will be off until Saturday when they will play their first home game of the season at 5 p.m. against Penn State Schuylkill in the Rinso Marquette Tournament.
