Volleyball Uses Strong Defense To Sweep Alvernia

READING, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College volleyball team used strong defense with a season-high six total blocks and 55 digs to defeat Alvernia University in three sets on Tuesday evening in a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth (MAC Commonwealth) match in Reading.
 
The Dutchmen (13-6, 3-3 MAC Commonwealth) won a close match against the Golden Wolves (9-9, 1-4 MAC Commonwealth) pulling away late in each set. LVC won by scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-22. Alvernia won the first four points of the match and held the Dutchmen off until LVC won consecutive points to take an 8-7 lead. The Golden Wolves would lead 17-16 after three straight points but the Dutchmen responded with a 5-0 run to take their biggest lead of the set.
 
The Golden Wolves raced out to a 7-3 lead to begin the second set but once again the Dutchmen fought their way back winning seven of the next eight points to take a 10-8 lead. Alvernia led 19-18 before Lebanon Valley closed out the set with seven consecutive points with Abigail Souder serving. Souder ended the set on a service ace. The third set was another close battle between the teams with neither team able to gain more than a two-point advantage until a Taylor McInerney kill gave LVC a 10-7 lead. The Golden Wolves went on a run to take a 15-12 lead forcing a timeout call. Lebanon Valley came out of the timeout strong winning the next three points to tie the set. The set was tied at 18 when the Dutchmen won five of the next six points to take a 23-19 lead. Alvernia cut the lead to 23-22 before consecutive kills by McInerney ended the match.

  • Ali Whitworth had a great all-around night with 27 assists, six kills, 11 digs, and four block assists.
  • McInerney led the offense with 16 kills and added eight digs.
  • Robyn Stepler led the defensive effort with 12 digs and one solo block.
  • Margaret Cole had seven kills and three block assists.
  • Madison Kreider had three service aces.
  • The six total blocks on one solo block and 10 block assists tied a season-high for the Dutchmen. The 55 digs are the most LVC has recorded in a three-set match this year.

Lebanon Valley will be back on the road this Saturday for a tri-match at Misericordia University. The Dutchmen will take on Mount Saint Mary College at 2 p.m. and then face the host Cougars at 4 p.m.
